Video games to rip sounds from ?

Post by daft cunt » Fri Dec 18, 2009 2:10 am

Preferably simple sounds rather than overprocessed ones.

Any ideas ?

I'd be looking in the PS1 zone, if I was you mate..

Silent Hill 1 & 2 (even the OSTs has some GREAT atmospheres and I think 90% of peopel on here could appreciate the OSTs listening start > finish)
Resident Evils.
Tombi/tomba
Alien Trilogy
Arc The Lad
Vangrant Story
Colony Wars
Dino Crysis
Disc world series
Final Fantasy games
The WWF(WWE) games
Just to name a few

My best advice would be to stick within the adventure, RPG and platformer games (though don't take my word for it) as they have quite a lot of SFXs and nice soundtracks - dialog too. PS1 is also where games started to get proper sound, other than 8 bit music and whatever. Plus, its emulated with ease.

the "squashed" sound from the arcade game frogger is pretty cool - kinda sounds like a fat square wave with automation on the pitch. i think you can get it at http://www.digitpress.com - i don't have access to that website at work right now, otherwise i'd post a link . . .

edit - fixed typo

Ah, my chosen Mastermind subject... :)

You didn't specify the kind of sounds you wanted, but some recent games where cool sounds can be found:

Dead Space (amazing sound design, I want to sample the whole damn thing)
Left 4 Dead
Mass Effect
Halo: ODST (some great bluesy music in that too)
Braid
FEAR 1 + 2

For simpler, more traditional 'game' sounds, you would need to go back to the 16 bit era, SNES, Megadrive etc. I'm lucky enough to still have mine, I may go on a sample-a-thon over the holidays!

In here the dubshitstep what I committed

Thanks gonna have a try at them.

I'm primarily looking for sounds like the games/films sound designers use for background noises, metal surfaces being hit, door cracking, stuff like that.
I also expect to find lots of sounds I can't think about :D

Will have a look at the games you suggested, there are always gems in these kind of games but I want them as raw as can be.

Yeah got that one.
That's the good era for raw material, good sound design and not heavily processed.

Includes the Half Life ones, Trent Reznor's Doom sounds and some old skoolers from Elite.

How about any video game ever? Just audition some games and hunt for samples as opposed to seeing what everyone else is doing or what game has the best bleep sounds. Just sayin'.

That's quite obvious if you're a gamer but playing VG is too time-consuming to me.

Just out of interest, what's your technique on sampling games? Are you micing up your TV, or is there some magic way to rip audio from the disks?

Don't know how to do it with games console but for the PC games most of the time the sounds are packed in specific types of archives so you just have to find the appropriate extractor.
Go to your datas folder, see what's the extension of the sounds archive and google it + extractor or extract.
Primarily, the extractors are made by/for gamers who want to "mod" (customize) the graphics or misc elements of the game environment.
