dub/reggae

Post by kesOh » Fri Dec 18, 2009 10:28 am

I posted this in the other section but I think im get a better response in here.

can anyone lead me in on info about the dub sound of reggae. I know king tubby is popular for producing and pushing the dub sound. can someone name some of the pioneers of the sound and current artists who are doing the same?

2 of my favourite dub records i play out are by Atiko Minus Project. Only ever seen 2 vinyl releases by them "green" and "I-wisa" Check them out they're amazing.

Also Disrupt make some cool tunes . Can't forget the mighty Vibronics, Dubateers also Mighty Diamonds, Alpha Omega. Theres loads for you to find and enjoy.

Here's a 20 minute promo thing I did for our local crew Systems 2nd birthday. Some nice Digi-dub business.

And we hand it back over to the fat guy with the mash.

I suppose I'll put my reply from the other thread here too.....

Some of the pioneers apart from Tubby......

Joe Gibbs
Duke Reid
Glen Brown
Augustus Pablo
Prince/King Jammy
Scientist
Sly & Robbie
Lee Perry/Upsetters

Today some of those folk are still going strong pushing fresh Dub plus there are new talents although alot of them have been doing this thing for a while too.....

Mad Professor
Smith & Mighty (Rob Smith now makes amazing Dubstep under the name RSD)
Rhythm & Sound
Sofa Surfers
Kruder & Dorfmeister
Thievery Corporation
Howie B
Ticklah/Easy Star All-Stars
Techno Animal
Bill Laswell/Jah Wobble............

The list really could go on and on and on due to the massive imapct "Dub" has had on modern music.

3 "new" Dub albums I'd really recommend checking out are.............

"Sly & Robbie Strip To The Bone By Howie B"
Image

Sofa Surfers "Cargo"

Rhythm & Sound "See Mi yah"

These are all very different modern Dub albums which is great as you can really hear the different directions this music has gone........ they are all absolutely brilliant and a fantastic place to begin with the modern version (no pun intended) of Dub.

Yeah that Sofa Surfers album "Cargo" is friggin AMAZING.

They're from Vienna.

Their first 3 albums are great....their fourth was a strange take on Alternative Rock.

Cargo is easily their best followed by Encounters.

You won't have heard anything like that Sly & Robbie/Howie B track either by the way mate......I hope you have some good headphones or a solid sound system.

Hi mate, see this list of classic dub LP's compiled for Black Echoes in 1977. (Make sure you click on the 'Top 20 albums' and 'Best of the rest' links on the right.)

http://roughblackechoes.blogspot.com/

Some are very hard to find these days so good luck.

I've got 14 out of the top 20 and would agree that they are superb.

As for productions, I highly recommend early seventies mixes by King Tubby, Lee Perry, Errol Thompson, Herman Chin Loy, Derrick Harriott, Prince Buster, Keith Hudson and Ernest Hookim.

Enjoy!

For education on dub reggae I would highly reccomend a visit to the deadly dragon soundsystem website.

Riddim lists, huge catalogue of dub reggae and dancehall and other related music from the islands.

It's funny to think that although the British Empire were the scourge of the non aristocratic population of the planet, there are some amazing by products that came out of their attempt to rule the world.

I still think many people don't realise that the populace of islands like jamaica are not indiginous (sp?) to that land. It wasn't something that was taught at school (the mandatory years) when I was in attendance, and I doubt it is now.
