Well I have been messing around with FL and Ableton for awhile now and I have always been into producing but never took it seriously until recently I have decided to take it serious and see where I can go with it. My main question is that I don't have any musical background at all will this effect my production? because I am certain a good majority of you and well known producer all have some sort of background in music. Also if you have any tips shoot them my way!

Knowledge is power, so the more you learn about music and all the things related to it, the easier you'll find it to translate your ideas into reality...

Even without any knowledge, you can still create tunes by trial and error. If you enjoy making tunes, then read up about the things that you don't understand whilst experimenting with the software that you use...!

you dont really need a music background to start you should write down a few minor keys and just look at that while messing around eventually youll get an ear for what sounds right

Basic knowledge of music theory is a must in my opinion if you want to be serious about your productions, sure play around with synthesis and drum programming and stuff, learn your software, but your not gonna be able to produce a solid track if you dont know anything about structure, keys and all that fun stuff. Just google it and you'll find endless amounts of knowledge, good luck

id agree if it wasnt for the fact that so many people are making "bro" step and its not even music half the time just hardcore metal wobble in any key or the same note with some sparse drum

just play around with a keyboard for a while, check out different chords you can come up with make up bass lines on the lower keys, make up lead lines, you dont really need to know anything to be honest, making songs just takes practice, like learning how to play the guitar or use a sampler.

Burial said in an interview that he's had no musical training at all, and he makes some of the most tuneful stuff out there. I'd say the more you know the better though, and actually the basics of music theory really aren't that hard to grasp.

TO make GOOD music you it does help you know something about music and the theory behind it. To say you don't really need to know anything shows that you most probably don't know anything about hte theory side of things, and you have made some music which you think sounds quite good. Yes, there are occasionially artists who have not background whatsoever in music and produce great music, but the vast majority generally produce shit.

In shor it is important and helps a lot if you have some knowledge about music
