Right, in Redrum, if i load a sample, draw it on the piano role, start to play the track, stop the track, the sample continues to play. How can i stop this, so the sample will stop dead.

depends really, the only way ive found to do it is quicky go to note length, drop it to zero, then back up to full, it stops then

there may be a better way im unaware of though

however, i think if you use NN-XT for samples, you wont have this problem at all

you should defo consider the NN-XT, i used redrum for ages til someone suggested XT, tried it and never looked back

Can't you only load one sample per NN-XT though

no, theres the main patch browser, you dont want that, go to sample browser, load as many as you like.

just a simple case of setting the zones and root keys, so much more possibilities with the XT as opposed to Redrum

has lfo, mod envelope, frequency display on the filter instead of 0 - 127

just make sure each time you load a sample, the previous one you loaded isnt highlighted or it will be replaced with the next one

O well that defo sounds better, my only concern is, if i have a new zone which has the same root key as another sample it wont work will it ?

Mer. ---> Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs/Unistall.

Switch the Redrum channel with your sample into gate mode. Samples will then stop playing at the end of each midi note instead of playing all the way through the sample.

Press F1 and type 'Redrum' into the search field. Read the section on playback modes to understand what Redrum is doing and how to change its operation.

it doesnt hurt to have the same root sometimes, just depends on what you are doing, if you want different root keys for samples, highlight desired sample, and its the first little dial under sample screen on the left

then go along to the low key and hi key dials to choose where on the scale they will play

hope that helps, you will have more fun once you've sussed the XT out though trust me

Great alternatives to try:

Drum Samplers
Native Instruments Battery
FXpansion Guru
Another Small Clue Poise
Tatapoum (free)

Samplers
Vember Audio Short Curcuit 1 (free)
Imageline Directwave
Native Instruments Kontakt

Once you've used these alternatives a few times, you may begin to wonder what all the fus is about NN-XT...

Battery 3, Guru and Directwave are my favourites, although I settled on Poise and Short Curcuit as that's what I could afford on my limited income...

Battery and Guru piss all over Redrum and NN-XT for drum sampling... (Built in effects, proper sample looping, multiple outputs, sample editing etc)

ive been using reason about 4 years, reason 4 just over a year now

tunes are coming along ok i guess, still not hitting the right sort of quality im looking for, but each new one better than the last (i think lol)

as for the next mix, ive just got over a whole load of pc probs, 3 failed drives etc. got a brand new system up and running this week, still recovering data from the last one so stuffs a bit all over the place right now

prob wont be doing another one until the new year

That sounds like a headache...! :o

I didn't realise you'd been using Reason for so long! :)

hope all the file recovery works out and that you can get back to business soon though! :)

pretty much been reason all the way really

ive had ableton for about a year but hardly been able to use it as the last pc i was using couldnt handle it for some reason, just kept giving me the blue screen of death when things got a bit too much for it

now ive got this new system im slowly putting it through its paces, then im going to start getting more in depth with live, reason is going to be used pretty much for writing music, live for everything else, eq compression etc

all the talk of vst's on this forum tends to make you feel like you are missing out :( :D

You are missing out! Image

My friend has always sworn by Live, and even got me looking at it more closely.

I have yet to delve into it as deeply as I should, but I want to make some decent loops for it before I start messing with it :)

the time i have spent in live left me really quite impressed

esp the built in tutorials that you can follow, they helped me get right into it. the layout is great too, very straightforward.

im off out of town for xmas and new year on tuesday, when i get back i will have my AKG 240's, a nice little selection of vst's and a whole new attitude towards production for 2010 :)

its all about redrum for drum processing, cos you can wire each sample into its own channel on a mixer and process each sample seperately. to make the sample only last the length that you draw it in on the sequencer, you go on the redrum console and about halfway down the samples channel there is a switch called 'drum decay mode'. if you set it to the one that looks like a square (drum decay mode 1) then the sample will only play for the duration of the note you have written on the piano roll.
