Piece of shit laptop, need opinions, extremely urgent.
I am getting a Vestax VCI-100, the NI Audio 2 external soundcard (should i go with the simplest guitar rig one instead? same price at the local DJ Shop), and am using traktor pro, whatever the newest version is.
The only problem is, that if i want to play out all i have is a shitty laptop:
# Intel Pentium 4M 2.4 GHz Processor
# 2GB DDR PC2100 Memory (Am upgrading from 512MB Original)
# 15.4" WUXGA (1920x1200) TFT LCD Display and nVidia GeForce 4200 Go with 64 MB
# 30 GB Hard Drive (This is just kind of funny...)
# 2x DVD+RW Optical Drive
# SB Pro Compatible Audio
# Two USB 2.0 and One IEEE1394 Ports
# 14.2" x 10.9" x 1.5" @ 6.9 lbs.
The laptop is a 2002-2003ish model, and i'm wondering if with the 2GB ram upgrade it will run all of this hardware flawlessly...
I don't feel like playing out and all of a sudden getting massive clipping or even worse, have the fucking thing explode.
Will a laptop from 03' even be able to handle an external soundcard?
So express your opinion...
My last resort is to dish out another 800ish dollars and get a new laptop...
By the way this is pretty urgent, I booked a serious gig on the 25th and i kind of lied about having my own equipment...

Man up and tell them your laptop broke so you will need to use their equipment.

I'm Israeli (which means I'm Jewish)... Plus i'm already treating myself to a sound card and a vci-100...tavravlavish wrote:buy the macbook its christmas time treat yourself to something sexy.
The laptop is fine, I'm just wondering if 6-7 year old technology is capable of running the shit I want...
The specifications meet the ones NI and Vestax have on their sites...
I'm just not sure about the soundcard working, or maybe because the processor is old it's 2.4 ghz isn't the same as todays 2.4 ghz...
What the fuck is Pentium 4M?

You should be able to find a decent used laptop in the $400 - $600 range man. Maybe even a low grade brand new one. Do yourself a favor and get something that's not gonna mess up in the middle of your big night.

Re: Piece of shit laptop, need opinions, extremely urgent.
Pentium 4 is a single core processor. Pretty much every processor these days has at least two, meaning a 2.4ghz dual core has twice the processing power as yours.

Pentium 4M just means mobile, I assume its smaller, or configured to run cooler. 2.4ghz back then is the same as todayaesthetics wrote:The laptop is fine, I'm just wondering if 6-7 year old technology is capable of running the shit I want...

Re: Piece of shit laptop, need opinions, extremely urgent.
I'm going to have like 4-5 hours at home with the VCI 100 and my shitty laptop before my set, so i convinced a friend to lend me his if the shitty laptop gives me any noticeable problems within those 4-5 hours...

You could drop 900 on a macbook, but you could also get a decent acer for like 4/500.

You could always go to bestbuy/apple store/wherever, buy a laptop, and then return it the next day. Just pay real close attention to the return policy. This is a bit risky but I have done it with a monitor before. Good luck

im on a 500 dollar acer and although it's okay for producing, i wouldn't dare try and play a gig on it. one thing to consider about windows is that you're going to get pop ups, notifications, alerts, etc which you can disable, but still. nothing more annoying than having the speakers up and gettin a "virus database has been updated" notification.evil madmen wrote:You could drop 900 on a macbook, but you could also get a decent acer for like 4/500.
i guess macbooks are more or less the standard for playing out live even though you can get pc's with just as good or better specs. even still, i have been considering getting one of those 900 dollar macbooks with some of the leftover school money ill be getting this spring

Is everyone rich?
EDIT
I'm going to try and install windows 7 on it and delete every program other than Traktor Pro and the drivers for the controller/sound card etc... and the only files on it will be music files. I won't even put a wifi card in it... It's pretty much going to be a computer dedicated solely to the purpose of playing out...
I saw some guy on youtube with Traktor on an acer mini-netbook, so i'm hoping things will work out...

haha definetly not. it's the fact that i am so broke that qualifies me for the max amount of federal aid money. there's lots of grants and scholarships out there that help to pretty much cover tuition and leave you with a nice check every semester.aesthetics wrote:$900 = Some of the leftover school money?wayoftheworld wrote:im on a 500 dollar acer and although it's okay for producing, i wouldn't dare try and play a gig on it. one thing to consider about windows is that you're going to get pop ups, notifications, alerts, etc which you can disable, but still. nothing more annoying than having the speakers up and gettin a "virus database has been updated" notification.evil madmen wrote:You could drop 900 on a macbook, but you could also get a decent acer for like 4/500.

So you're saying that if i'm between broke and sort-of-broke-but-not-really, i'm better off being completely broke cause then i'll actually be rich?
And then they wonder why the economy crashed... I'm on your side though, fuck the system

Dude, if you can run Traktor on XP, then install XP. More of your resources will be taken running Windows 7, if you install XP you'll have more CPU/RAM etc to make Traktor run better. Get me.
