"Wasp performs roach-brain-surgery to make zombie slave-roaches
Ampulex compressa is a wasp that has evolved to tackle roaches, insert a stinger into their brains and disable their escape reflexes. This lets the wasp use the roach's antennae to steer the roach to its lair, where it can lay its egg in it. Parasite Rex author Carl Zimmer tells the story in gooey, graphic detail:
The wasp slips her stinger through the roach's exoskeleton and directly into its brain. She apparently uses sensors along the sides of the stinger to guide it through the brain, a bit like a surgeon snaking his way to an appendix with a laparoscope. She continues to probe the roach's brain until she reaches one particular spot that appears to control the escape reflex. She injects a second venom that influences these neurons in such a way that the escape reflex disappears.

Yeah, I know, it's an amazing setback, but due to the gift of booze, I shall endure.
Must say this is an amazing thread, but I would like to point out that I've been doing a similar thing with paper clips for years. I don't use cockroaches, but I have found that very drunk people operate in a very similar manner with the right procedures. You now have an excuse for drunken morality, you can just blame me. You will have to find me first though.
I am legion by the way.

well i actually jacked the name of the thread from the article so-- i don't think I would deserve a nomination for that.
Thanks anyway
as far as the offtopic awards go- maybe we can run our own poll in offtopic?

seriously, one of the cooler things ive seen or heard of.
where I live, we have these wasps called 'pepsis wasps'
their like this long:
|-----------------------------------------------------------------------|
like the size of a hummingbird. and they land on tarantulas here and paralize em, then lay eggs in the tarantula and the tarantula gets eaten by the wasp larvae. not as cool as the roach wasp, but ive actually seen a pepsis wasp fly down and land on a tarantula and drag it into the bushes.
it sounded like a fucking animal was in the bushes... two huge-ass insects battling it out... it was creeepy, but cool
nature is fucked UP.

I was wondering what I wanted for Christmas and then you mentioned this. I think an army of socks is not going to be quite so scary.
Might be better to have the wasp army and then they can run the cockroaches as advance troops/cannon fodder.
Come my evil insect empire, come....

Sure flemmily .
you will also need replicate about one hundred thousand of these zomby wasps under your control as well though.
