Sub Bass
If my root of the track is at C. my Sub bass is hitting at C as well at 2 octaves down it its at 33 hertz and you can't even hear it at all. Raise it an octave up and its hitting around 70 to 100. but just sounds not right. Any suggestions on how to make it so you can hear that sub some how? Its just a straigh Sine wav

Re: Sub Bass
use differnet notes on the keyboard maybe? if you only ever use C you're gonna be severely limited
Re: Sub Bass
this. although just cuz you cant hear the low c doesnt mean its not there. might sound proper with 15"s or in the club. personally i really like low ass subs.narcissus wrote:use differnet notes on the keyboard maybe? if you only ever use C you're gonna be severely limited

C isn't a great key for bassmusic, even if C is the peoples' key.

Re: Sub Bass
A note derivatives for the win, nothings better then an A note a-la subwoofa with a volume envelope what makes the tone sweep accross two bars. Beautiful.
On a note though man, does it have to remain PURELY sine wave? I notice that if put just a LITTLE bit of waveshaping into it through either a send or a wet/dry, it can really make a huge differnce in audibility... and itll add a nice warmth or mod to the traditional old sine wave...
Really though, at that rate, you could just try incoorporating a bit of another waveform in there somewhere, waveshaping will just give you an easy way to create imperfection in the sine, which can make perfection in the sound...
I deal with that too, annoying, innit? does it makeyour speakers do a wierd the-powers-on-but-noones-home kinda hollow sound too? GRR!!! Waveshape, distort, or add a low volume oscillator.

Re: Sub Bass
Since this is a sub bass thread for the mil' time, I have been experimenting on getting a full sub sound by using minor stereo, with proper compression and limiting I stay on mark no more than +3dB.
What are everyone's suggestions about using stereo effects on a sub bass? For an example have a look at SP:MC "Trust Nobody"

Change key to F. F is the best subWe Bang wrote:If my root of the track is at C. my Sub bass is hitting at C as well at 2 octaves down it its at 33 hertz and you can't even hear it at all. Re: Sub Bass
This is going to be abit odd because i normally dont write in the key but, atm am using a key of E, and its sounding great! I have applied a small amount of compression just to thicken it up and make it at a controllable level, and it working really nicely with with my kick aswell. No muding sound/feel in the 1st harmonics.

Re: Sub Bass

Re: Sub Bass
Ah fuck, not the 'key of sub-bass' thing again. It doesn't make any sense people!
Re: Sub Bass
E,F,FShrp,G are the 'money' keys in bass driven music, its common place for dubstep/dnb producers etc to use these as they work best on sound systems etc, everything else and your gonna struggle to get that heavy bass needed on a big sound rig... STANDARD!

mmk, instead of saying "change ya key bruv", lets help ya out...We Bang wrote:If my root of the track is at C. my Sub bass is hitting at C as well at 2 octaves down it its at 33 hertz and you can't even hear it at all. yes, C isn't a great key, but lets say you're stuck with a sub-bass C note and need to make it loud.
what you want to do is turn up the Resonance on your LowPass pretty high, almost to 100 (you are using a LowPassFilter, correct?)
then, adjust the frequency of the LowPass until you hear it swell... at one point you will end up with a filter that is self oscillating, that's what you're going for.
other than that, theres compression, maximizing, etc etc
OR, the tried and true method that i learned in recording school.. "dont turn the subbass up, mix everything else down" <-- works! but can make your mastering weak
