My run in with Tinnitus

Hello DSF, hows it going? I have not been on for a while due to a few things but i thought i would share my story with you lot.

Am sure many of you as musicians have heard of the condition called tinnitus... Where all you can here in your ear is a ringing sound. Now am sure many of you have even heard some of the story on tinnitus on DSF, as there are quite a few threads about it. Now i my self have read a few of these story's about tinnitus, and how many allways say, in places where alot of load sounds (not just music) is produce you should protect your ears, with a good pair of plugs in placed in your ear... Now honestly specking how many of you have read these story's and thought dam!! but thought, that could not happen to me because am too young still (tinnitus normally happens after 40+, well normally anyways.) Or am not in places where a lot of load sounds is produced... Well your wrong!!

This is abit of a silly story but, i had a few friends around over the holidays, about a week ago from now, and we were just playing some Fifa. Now it was 2-2, and on like 89min, and my friend scored so out of absent mind i well damm... shitt.... and raised my hand and kind of taped my face, now this must have triggered something in my ear, but for about 30 seconds it was like i was almost deaf.. all i could hear was air going through my left ear. Now i thougth this would go away in a few hours but did it no..... It is so annoying, i didnt like high freq's what so ever, whenever i head them i got a headache, i didnt listen to music, because it would just gave me more of a headache, whenever i heard high hats i got a headache,i could not go sleep at night, i had to keep a fan on to distract my mind (which didnt really work.)

I had it for like a week, so i contacted my doctor and spoke to him about it, he checked my ear drum and said no, your ear drum looks good, no damage is done. This ringing noise will fade away in time, you could not possible get it at my age, tinnitus takes years of damage. This was yesterday by the way.. i have not fully recovered, but feeling abit better, but still can hear it abit.

Moral of my story... tinnitus seriously dangerous, no joke! Dont take it faint heartedly and think it will not happen to you.

Trust me, protect your self! Where plugs god has provided !

But seriously I was up all night producing, working on sub bass through headphones about 6 months ago, Suddenly I got some sharp pain in 1 ear so i stopped. I never heard any ringing but every time i heard high pitched sounds for weeks after that I got the pain again. The curious thing was it didn't hurt to listen to bassier sounds, I even went to a dubstep night and I was fine with the subs, but I couldn't use my phone on that side cos the tinny speaker hurt my ear.

Needless to say I watch the levels now when i'm producing on headphones.

ive been dealing with pain in my right ear from years of loud music. its more hyperacusis than tinnitus but either way its self inflicted and avoidable. i just went to an audiologist last week to get fitted for custom ear plugs that lower volume by -25db. perfect as its cuts out the highs (graish high freq are what damages your hearing) and leave all of the BASS.

They make musician earplugs that only block harmful frequencies and decibels. They are pricey and the best kinds are custom fit to each person, but in my opinion definitely worth it if you play out or go out a lot and value your hearing. http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/erme.aspx are some of the best ones.

I have had this for many years now. Playing in bands since I was 16 (31 now) and followed by loud clubs. I always have ear plugs on me going out. Please take the advice and protect your ears, I would love to have my young ears back again.

if i forget to take them to a night, i cant stand and listen to the music for to long and end up taking very regular breaks and go outside for a ciggy and damage my lungs instead.

Yes you should watch out, and take Tinitus seriously when you start developing it.

Heheh playing guitars and drums is worse for your ears than bass music is. I also used to hunt with rifles and shit when I was younger. Never protected myself. I dunno I might have hyper acute hearing or whatever you call it. Sensitive hearing. Didn't get a doctor to confirm it but I have had a ringing in my ear for damn near 20 years now so I think it's safe to say. I still check out fine on the hearing tests and stuff fwiw.

Dont know how I used to do it before having ear plugs.

Since buying them I can never go out without them. I took one out on a night before and bloody hell it was LOUD. Its so nice to come home and have normal hearing instead of ringing for 2 days
