Just wondering what notes some of you are using for sub bass?
im using F

I was under the impression that the sub just plays the same notes as your midrange except really low? then again I could be doin it all wrong

That low G always sounds pretty dope. But ya if you have a more midrangey bass on top then your sub bass should generally be in the same key as it.

I may be horribly misinformed is are we talking about only using one note in a key for the sub? or do the sub notes change?

a subbass note is just a simple note like any other. it's frequency is just very very low. so no mystery there, don't be worried about breaking any secret rules because there are none.

fact is though that the lower you go, the less a note can be heard. if you go much lower than 50Hz-ish, not many soundsystems will be able to reproduce your sub. so generally, if your track is melodic, you should keep this in mind. i mean you should have in mind that your subbassline shouldn't go much lower than 50Hz. it can though. no rules to break.

anyway, a G1 is 49Hz, and an A1 is 55Hz. also, keep you subbass low in the mix. it should hit your chest more than your ears. no rules though, once again. ;]

E or F.... idk depends on the tune, tbh i dont rly make subs i just make one phaaat as fuck noise and layer it shit loads, ill split the frequencies so my low end is bused to a seperate channel then just keep Eq'ing and bouncing it till it sound like a sub, makin sure its mono. kinda contradicts its self there i suppose.

A low A always a nice one. But I usaually keep it with the midrange if its there or sometimes the melody line, mix it up

sometimes i like to write in Bb, though rarely, and sometimes it's down to Eb... every track is different. F# to Ab is probably my favorite range

to answer somebody's question, by key he meens 'root key' so f would be the key that the whole track revolves around and the melody works around that in whatever scale. if the mix comes out safe you can make a goddamn sub symphony if you want.

on the subject of my sub? i don't bother to figure out what key my shit is in i just make what sounds good.

I use F as my root note quite a lot, but I think it might be a bit hard for most systems.. my monitors struggle with it a bit too - it's there and clear but not very strong. I mainly use it because I'm really comfortable with the F minor scale and can't be arsed learning G minor or any other scales well.

i def would not go lower than E and generally stay in F or F minor.

A flat minor is the golden sub...

But like everyone said, it depends on whats on top... I saw mixed in key the other day, now Im stuck on it, becasue whether you realize it or not shit like vocal samples n percussive incidents can have key too, n if you have a nice a bassline and your incidentals are all at a, and your mids have the progression, you can get a nice sound if you really think on it...

Its not aobut 'what key do I write in'... its aobutamking sure everythings in it! Pick a damn root note n jam though man, theres only 8 of em to start from...

Another note, sometimes 8 bars this key and then switch, ect... can provide a nice progression throughout.
