What do you guys think about Excision and Datsik always using the same bass sounds and patterns in every track? Even some of the same vocal samples get used in multiple tunes.

dunno 'bout this, but i think if someone doesn't like it, they shouldn't listen to it.

True, but the fans can't get enough of it.

I don't know why it should be a problem. As long as it sounds good... well... it sounds good.

I get that, and when their stuff first started coming around, I liked it, but it got old and tired quickly.

Aye I feel you mate, but honestly I think they are at the limit of disgusting bass, it can't get anymore sick than that... so therefore, they are stuck with the same sounds.

I think they're just plain lazy about their music. They found a formula that works and they stick to it.

Im interested in hearing a response from Datsik himself, he posts here now and again when his name comes up.

Personally, i love the sound, but yeah its getting a bit thinned out by now. I think both excision and datsik are moving in different ways now, some of their new stuff sound classically rottun recordings, but has a different edge.

To be fair though, i really don't think he uses the same sound too much. Listen to how many incredible bass sounds are used in 'Gamma Ray Burst', and then listen to something like 'Ghosts'. He does a fantastic job of creating very different sounds that work perfectly together.

That is true, but he certainly fits into the Datsik/Excision/*Downlink* group :)

honestly I can't get enough of their music, it is fuckin awesome, if you don't like it thats fine too. obviously it i s designed to smack you in the face hard as fuck and by god it does. Frankly in every song I have heard there has been something new and they are continuing to develope their style in a genre that is seemingly filled with a lot of people using the same sounds as everybody else.

Yeah he is a part of the Rottun fam, but i think hes got a varying style that makes him more appealing to me. Hes a real nice guy and i had the pleasure of getting the stems and remixing his track "Talk dubby to me" for a forthcoming release on filthy digital (watch out for a HD video to be released at teh same time ;) ) Hes very positive and has time for a typically unknown artist like myself.

Downlink is my favourite dubstep producer fullstop, so i've got a bit of bias

Lots of guitar bands use the same "patch" in all their songs... it's the writing that counts, not just the production.

true nuff

edit: with that said, it does set producers apart when they have the creative ability to come up with new sounds for every track, you know?

All their tracks sound the same to me.

I remember when I commented on a mix Excision did on this forum when I first heard of the bloke. I said the mix was boring because all of the tunes in the mix sounded the same and it went absolutely nowhere. I didn’t know at the time most the tracks were his. Good to see others have picked up on this even if a few years later:)

Whatever you do do not criticize Excision or he may get in contact with you like he did me :u:

Had this talk a lot of times with mates of mine.

A good analogy is music generally. A lot of bands use guitars, trumpets and so on, nobody ever complains about that.

When you hear a track with a flute you don't go "oh, this motherfucker used the flute again, lazy bastard". So what really matters is the writing and the response.

I guess the audience can eventually get tired of these sounds. Producers tend to overanalyze music and get tired of certain trends quicker than the average listener.

I, too like Matt, am interested to hear what Datsik has to say about this one.

But you can't blame anyone for recycling sounds. I do it a lot too! Especially with drums (mostly hi hats and percs).

Cheers,
Jason
