Me and a couple of mates are planning a ferry day trip to see the city and ive got a few questions,

For any of you that have been before,

what would you reccommend seeing? like around the city, any particular sights or whatever?

Any info on going into coffee shops when under 18? I mean weve got pretty damn legit car license ID's but im still not sure, its not like were relying on going to coffeeshops but i guess id't be nice haha

And is there anything else we should really do while there for the day?

basically we spend a day on the ferry, spend a day in the dam, and spend a day on the return ferry.. 35 quid each, not bad, be a nice lil something to do

Thanks! :Z:

I haven't been in almost 10 years. But I had fun everywhere I went. Just don't ask to see "the gorillas in the mist"

I just moved out of amsterdam 3 months ago.

If you're going for one day (which sucks), look up dubstep.nl and go to announcements for a good night out.

During the day I suggest getting Jack Hadder from coffeeshop Tuintje, it's located on a street called the Overtoom, take tram 1 from central station and just ask the guy where to get off. Also get AK47 from Dampkring, which is located right in the center, AK47 will kinda kill you, so make sure you have plenty of time to do fuck nothing.

Good places to go are the Museumplein (Museum Square) it's a HUGE square, where all the cool people are (depending on the weather). For a good sight you should go to the top of a museum called NEMO. Look it up on google. It's a huge building in the shape of the front of a ship and you can stand right on top of it. Make sure you are not too trippy when you go there, a girl died a few years ago, falling off.

I'd say, when you come on the station, take tram 1 to Overtoom. Walk back heading for the center, while going there, walk past museum sqaue. Go to the center, go to Dampkring, and then chill out in a bar somewhere, and head out to a good dubstep night. If you tell me the date I can look up a good night for you :)

Have a good time, and enjoy yourself!

i plan on going soon, a mate of mine was saying though that they could be making it illegal for non dutch citizens to smoke the high grade there. could this be possible?

ive always thought not because thats one of their main sources of income off tourists.

It's legal to smoke for anyone aged over 16. It's legal to buy in a coffeeshop for anyone over 18. It's legal to chill out in the coffeeshop for anyone over 21 (sometimes it's fine if you are 18).

Your second statement is correct.

Okay I just looked and there is not much on that weekend. The only gig I found was one in a fairly crappy venue, but they do play some deeper stuff instead of just the standard chase and status rusko bangers.

It's really close to where I used to live, and also a few hundred meters away from the coffeeshop Tuintje as I mentioned in my firts post.

Just so you know, I can't guarantee that this will be a good night, I've been to OT301 (the venue) before only a few times, and sometimes it's just really empty. It's full of spacers and hippies but it's a good place to enjoy when you are stoned (which you will be I suppose lol)...

Also, there is also a crazy good coffeeshop called Kashmir Lounge really close to OT301. (Those guys are my neighbours) haha.

A couple of other questions,

Any info on going into coffee shops when under 18? I mean weve got pretty damn legit car license ID's but im still not sure, its not like were relying on going to coffeeshops but i guess id't be nice.

And more importantly is there anything interesting to see in the day, like whilst walking around etc, what would you recommend?

You can not buy weed when you are under 18. They will always ask for your ID since they have to close the shop as soon as they get caught with even 1 underage buyer. They only accept Europe ID's, Passports and driving licences (not sure about international driver's licences...)

Like I said, during the day, if the weather is nice, you should go to Museumplein. If it's really nice weather, go smoke a blunt in the Vondelpark. Make sure you ask someone for the "hippy field" it sounds stupid lol but that's where all the nice/semi-young people are. If the weather sucks.... Amsterdam kinda sucks if it rains, I usually just hang out with some mates when it rains. Make sure that you don't hang out in the town centre all day, you should go to the Leidseplein (Leidse square) and from there head out away from the centre, way more fun shit, and you won't get tourist ripped :)

It's stupid, I live in scotland atm for 12 months, otherwise I could buy you some weed from the good spots if you aren't 18 yet :>

Judging by the past years... sorry mate, but the weather is going to suck :D

If you like hiphop, there is a good bar (not a club) where every night is a oldskool-ish vinyl DJ spins some good stuffs! This is also one of the only places where you can smoke inside. It's called Duivel and it is only about 15 minutes walking from central station. (okay I'm lying, but if you take tram 16, 24 or 25 you'll be there in 5 minutes (btw, tram 5, 16 and 24 are the only trams in amsterdam that you can take without buying a ticket. Just hop on and you will be fine, USE THIS KNOWLEDGE! it will save you tons))

So is it an interesting city? like is there any really ancient parts or anything?

basically anything thats gonna be cool to see while walking around high with a couple of mates, were not expecting our trip to be mind blowingly exciting, were just doing it to do something a little different you know, better than anything else we'd otherwise be doing in the UK put it that way :D

Hmm well I guess people from abroad love the canals, but to me it's so boring... but you might want to check it out, you can rent a little pedal boat for a day, smoke a spliff and cruise the canals with your mates! I did it quite a few times, but for someone from amsterdam it's rather boring ;)
