well i recently watched rusko's video on youtube... and he tells you that that's what he does, so lots of people probably are simply copying him.. sounds all right to me, but there are plenty of other ways to get your snare sounding nice without it

You mean the action break? Like the one Pendu uses in every tune. I happen to love that break but I liked it since the 90s, long before Pendu and the like.
