So my Spring semester classes started today. I'm a music major, but I have ZERO experience with music.. so as you can imagine, things haven't been as easy for me as it has for others...

but if you're like me, and you've started producing and found that it is what you truly love and wish to pursue, then I STRONGLY suggest taking a "Music for Elementary School Teachers" class.

I thought this class was going to be an easy A, but honestly.. its already taught me a GRIP about the BASICS of music.. stuff that I wasn't even taught in regular school.

Last semester I learned how to READ music, but I didn't learn any pitch identification, nothing about rhythm, nothing about demonstrating your knowledge of music through actual application... By taking this course and learning how to teach music to a person that learns with their ears and eyes (not by reading) I feel like I'm getting more in touch with myself musically. Clapping out beats, singing, just doing the silly stuff you wouldn't normally do in a college classroom.. I'm glad I've got this opportunity to just be a kid when it comes to learning music... it kind of opens your eyes a bit more in regards to what music really is, and how to feel music rather than just see or hear it.

So yea, like I said.. if you're a budding producer like myself and other music classes seem too technical or just plain boring.. take this class if its available. You aren't going to learn anything about synthesis or LFO automation... but it will definitely help you find your own vibe.

Pretty interesting.

I saw a documentary called How Music Works, and it is somewhat as how you describe your class. They start from the basics, what music IS, why certain notes trigger certain emotions, and also how rhythm works. For some reason I learn a lot more from those simple kind of things instead of my sysnthesis/sound design course I'm on at the moment... Sure synthetic sounds are fun, but the core is what matters.

If you guys want to sound like Flying Lotus, this is probably the way to go.

where do you go to school?

UCSD, SDSU... City College?

I took music theory and recording arts at Mira Costa in North County

was a great experience

I go to Mesa (same district as City), and I'm going to be transfering to UCSD after I get my Associate's degree. I'm pursing a PhD.. I'd like to be a professor at a University eventually... I figure its easier than becoming a successful DnB or Dubstep act... plus I can get tenure and benefits..

I start my computer music/synthesis class tonight... my piano class started last night.. SOOOOOOOOOO SICK.

oh yeah!

I am familiar with Mesa.. almost took some video editing courses there
