Metal kit drums + a question

My flatmate wants to start up an experimental metal project, with me programming in drums. I'm sure Depone has posted a rock kit sample pack or something? If he did then a link would be great, or if anyone knows any other realistic metal drum kit sample packs.

Recently i've been more into dragging and dropping audio files into the arrange window for drums instead of using Ultrabeat (Well kicks and snares anyway, i use the sampler for hats etc.)

I'm going to be using 2 audio tracks for the kick drum (Double kick, one for left foot, one for right foot) so i can effectively pan and lower the volume slightly of the left kick. Same as snares for snare rolls. I'm assuming there's no other way of changing the volume of one audio hit inside a single track instead of having to create 2 or 3 to give off different 'velocities'?

It's not like a double bass drummers left foot is always weaker than his right foot.

You're better off playing with the velocities on certain accents, like the downbeat.

The panning idea is great, but don't overdo it! Just a tiny bit to the right, and a tiny bit to the left.

i've never played drums, so i was just doing guesswork on that part. Just if i'm working with audio instead of loading into a sampler it'll be way too robotic for a realistic drum pattern, is there no other way to change the volume of individual audio hits inside one track? Looks like i may be going back to Ultrabeat if not.

I'm not sure about Logic, but in Reason you could assign an LFO to work on the velocity on the sample.

Make it a square waveform and the min and max values should be pretty close together. (Adjust rate to whatever speed your drums are going to be.)

Just spoken to my mate and he prefers Ultrabeat anyway, so i guess i'll be using that instead. Thanks though guys.

http://www.siliconbeats.com/drum_loops. ... order=name - bit pricey dunno if you were looking for free or not - as youre doing you're mate a favour you could get him to pay for it - lol
freebies for garage band that will work in logic http://www.macloops.com/audio/free_heav ... geband.php

gate everything and take out anything under like 150hz-- no bottom end on metal records these days :(

in modern black metal, probably 2/3 of the time the kick is a triggered (mono) sample-- no need to pan if you want it to "sound" like metal, but go for it otherwise.

listen to some ministry!

Only pussies use trigger'd bass pedals.

Best free rock kit I've heard of. Will require some dynamic work but not too much. I use these in more 'organic' dubstep stuff all the time.

I use Hyper Draw volume (controller #7) for this - it works like track automation but as it's Hyper Draw the volume information is always moved/copied with the region ;)

Usually I'll colour the individual regions red/orange/yellow so I remember which hit is loud, medium or soft ;)

addictive drums is a good plugin to get extreme metal sounding drums (what current value uses) also ez drummer with the drumkits from hell expansion is great (has kits the drummer from meshuggah did)

Yeah I think there's a new version now too, "Superior"... I think. As far as I remember with EZDrummer it eats RAM for breakfast, I never took to it.

I agree with all the Drumkit From Hell suggestions, a mate uses it in his electronic productions and also his solo metal stuff.

I know you can get proper indepth with all the room ambience and micing of the drums and velocities of everything to get it sounding more natural too.

Meshuggah used only DFH on their album Catch Thirty Three, give some it a listen to get an idea of what it's capable of

somehow I think double bass and blastbeat drum tutorials on youtube are relavant to your interests... Could always sample those, chop them and layer sequenced drums over the top
