I'm looking for some hints on creating patches to get that lo-fi, pitchbent sound for my leads. I've been getting better at programming basslines but I feel this is an area I'm missing out on - I love to have an idea how guys like Joker, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke get those synth sounds. And i'd prefer not to just hear "go analogue".

Could be done a tonne of ways, probably just a fairly quick LFO/Filter, or just drawn in that way.

Feels like that synth in the second vid is moving, a likely detune + slight reverb.

Edit: In the middle of the song it feels like its dipping also (could be my ear infection + tired), possibly a sidechain?

Use a nice synth patch, then fuck it up with notch filters, automate, done

those are 2 different techniques:

the rustie one is just portamento with a slowish glide/slide setting. put your synth to legato mode, switch portamento on, turn the glide up and play a riff. job done.

the joker one is just pitch-bending, basically - jam your riff on the keyboard and dick around with the pitch bend knob. easy! notice that in 'do it' he basically uses 3 techniques; pitchbending onto the note (ie start with the chord lower/higher than you actually want, and then immediately pitchbend it at the start of the note), pitchbending off the note (ie play the note as normal, but pitchbend away at the end of it) and modulating it (ie play the note as normal, but then pitchbend off it and back onto it while you've held the key down).

ye man automating the tune as well as glide can help as well

i've been wondering this myself....simply detuning+portamento+ pitchbending dosn't give me the strength and squelchiness i'm looking for........adding notch filters and other things help but also take away from the cleanliness of it

Yeah, I've lived in this shithole all my life, gonna make it my mission to improve this place's taste in electronic music somehow.

True this, I'm gonna keep jamming on the midi keyboard to try and come up with some results but some more ideas on the sort of waveforms, filters, effects etc. I should be trying would be appreciated!

a fun thing to do is to route velocity and aftertouch to areas of your synth that it shouldnt go to. for example. route AT to the intensity of the waveform of an osc inside massive. or if your synth doesnt support aftertouch, then pencil in the modulation on the midi channel pressure parameter. also, pitchbends are cool and fun... but for instant pitch changes why not route AT to pitch of an OSC and at the same time amount of reverb wetness? i dunno. really, just get wild on that shit. what i am trying to say is route things where they shouldnt go. thats when it gets interesting. but i am sure ya have played with this already.
