Biometric Verification
So, this evening I went down to the shops to buy cigs. While there I was asked to show ID (nothing new there), and was then promplty asked to put my thumb onto one of these scanners.
I asked what it was all about, and apparently it's a system where by, if I put my thumb print into this machine it will recognise it everytime and no longer need to bring in my drivers liscence or passport for ID.
I told my dad about it and he said it all seemed 'very big brother'
Has anyone else seen these?
What are your thoughts?

Re: Biometric Verification
FUCK THAT
I'd ask for their terms and conditions on hte use of the scanner etc.

Re: Biometric Verification
Surely this is optional and at your own discretion, need to check on that though
.Much rather have the hassle of having to carry I.D everywhere than having my biological data stored on some giant server somewhere without my consent.

Were you buying cigs in the Mi-6 staff tuck shop?

Tell them they can have your thumb print when they pry it from your cold dead fingers.

Re: Biometric Verification
Yeaaaaaaaars ago my flatmate got asked for ID as we were going out, she didn't have any with her so pulled down her top and pushed her breasts forward (she had a healthy handful) towards the weedy yoof behind the kiosk and said, "DO YOU THINK 16 YEAR OLDS HAVE TITS THIS SAGGY!", I am not sure who was more embarrassed me or the lad behind the kiosk.

She didn't get them out out, just exposed her buxom curves inside her bra
I get asked for ID more often now than I did when I was underage, it's daft really. Most landlords and coppers were quite happy to turn a blind eye to a few teenagers having a cheeky cider or two and a game of pool as long as they didn't make a dick of themselves. Now they're forced to drink on the street; buying their booze from an offy where you get more alcohol for your £, which inevitably leads to kids acting like pricks and getting an ASBO. It's all arse about tit.

Re: Biometric Verification
the fingerprint is also solid proof in court, if digitalised it can appear anywhere you don't want it to in case you go to many protest meetings.firky wrote:Benefits, prescriptions, work visas, national insurance contributions, etc. I should imagine.alien pimp wrote:2 years ago i was called a tinfoil hat for predicting such developments, i'm gonna have fun watching where this goes

Re: Biometric Verification
I Don't know if the digitalised finger print has been used successfully to prosecute in an English court... yet. I doubt it will be either, they much prefer your DNA, especially if you're a male under 25 (and black or asian).
Re: Biometric Verification
I wouldn't be giving my fingerprint until I'd seen some legal stuff about how it's going to be stored and what else it's going to be used for.

Re: Biometric Verification
They had biometric verification in my school library. You couldn't get out a book if they didn't have your thumbprint. Same with the canteen, you had to have your thumb scanned to buy food.

Re: Biometric Verification
you should see what they are rolling out in India and Iraq.
I think the India database will include 1.2 billion people and be used for government benefits.
The Iraq one is 500,000 records.
and i think both of those use iris scanning.
some interesting reading here.

the interesting one is the mulit-modal iris scanning,.. does that translate to mobile iris scanners?
if i had no scruples, id invest in something along the lines of biometrics.

Re: Biometric Verification
thing is fingerprints are notoriously unreliable and not always easy to 100% verify if they belong to a certain person or notalien pimp wrote:the fingerprint is also solid proof in court, if digitalised it can appear anywhere you don't want it to in case you go to many protest meetings.firky wrote:Benefits, prescriptions, work visas, national insurance contributions, etc. I should imagine.alien pimp wrote:2 years ago i was called a tinfoil hat for predicting such developments, i'm gonna have fun watching where this goes

Re: Biometric Verification
thing is what we discuss here has zero relevance compared to the amount of people jailed based on fingerprint evidence, and even less relevance if you are sent in court to be convicted, not judged

What do you mean by that? Surely you get "judged" in court? Isn't that what they're for?alien pimp wrote:and even less relevance if you are sent in court to be convicted, not judged
