headphones messing with my ears!!!?

Sup people, im new to the forum, just got a couple questions
Ive been mucking around trying to produce for a while in reason and fl, and trying to get more into it so I got some "monitoring" headphones about a week ago. (proper speakers arent really an option)
So anyway they are these cheapish Legacy PH250 headphones (from australia). the sound is pretty good but im always really careful with my ears so i havent been cranking them that loudly. But after a few days of producing (reasonably quietly) one night I started getting this ringing in my ears. Its now been there for a couple days so im going to give the producing a break for a bit and hopefully it will go away. The ringings not noticable unless everything is quiet but obviously ive done a bit of damage to them.
What can you do to reduce damage to your ears when using headphones? I think having little break once in a while probably helps.
and do any of you guys know what does the damage? Is loud rumbling bass a bad idea? or is it the mainly the high pitched screechy stuff?
So yeah, just wanted to know what you guys think about this. Might be something wrong with the headphones? but Im pretty surprised really coz ive been using them at what i thought was a pretty low volume...
Anyway sweet site guys, ive learned so much from reading through the threads haha
Cheers
