why download them when you can just extract them from your Half Life 2 folder?

doesn't work like that man, they're not just sat about like headcrab_attack_1.wav. They're in source engine propriety format that the engine decodes into sound when run. I imagine finding a way to get the sounds out without playing through the game is quite a ballache for the regular who doesn't has a source engine SDK.
could be wrong tho.

Pretty sure that they are, in fact, just sat in the "half life 2" folder of Steam. Think the normal filepath for a Windows computer would be;
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\half life 2\sound
I've written some tracks using the samples... don't know whether they've encrypted the audio since then though.

Yeah, after the SteamPipe update you can just pull the files out of the game. If you still cant, how I did it was I used GCFScape
http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?p=26 to open the "half life 2 content.gcf" (or whatever it was called) and then extract the files.
To be honest like 60% of the sounds in HL2 are fairly recognizable stock (the fast zombie dude is the Wilhelm scream and I've heard the SMG fire sound in alot of other things (same with the wood impact sounds)).
