what are the rules on remixing tunes? Like I took the acapella off youtube for the Delerium remix. Is that legit or breaking the rules?

I need to know where I stand before making another.

Cheers dudes.

All depends on permission and licence type. Most of the time a remix will be against copyright but in our small scale scene I don't think many producers care if their stuff gets remixed. Also if your not huge yet nobody like EMI records will mind if you remix a track...

Without asking permission from the copyright owners it is illegal.

I recommend reading the last two chapters of 'Dance Music Manual by Rick Snoman' for detailed but easily digestible info on this subject, there was a video posted on the forum regarding sampling illegally as well, I'll see if I can find the link for the thread.

When its not released then u dont have to worry, even if it is nothing will happen, unless you are making millions with it, which is not going to happen

Is the whole book worth getting? Looks interesting.

If there's anywhere to sample or read the last two chapters too it'd be great, would help me on coursework.

Cheers dudes, I've got another idea for a remix so am going to press ahead with it, regardless. I know it's technically illegal now and I thought it would be, but if I can get away with it I will. Obviously, and I doubt it will happen, if the original producers get in touch and say you can't do that-remove it from your page etc etc then I will.

If you do a remix it is technically illegal and breach of copyright if you sample and of the original recoding, or use the melody without permission but in the more underground scenes you can geneally get away with it until you start making serious money, at which point if the copyright holder gets in touch you then you;ll just have to bend over and take their terms =P

What about nicking drum samples from someone elses song? I'm sure I heard rusko or someone say he nicks kick and snare samples from other records?

Still technically illegal, a sound recording is a sound recording, wether it's one kick drum or a whole piano line. It's just obviously a lot harder to prove, especially if you've manipulated the origional kick drum.

Wrong, by just creating the track you own the copyright to it.

I think he means in the sense that no one will find out about it.

This is what my comment was responding to. You can remix as many tracks as you want for 'personal' use, but for me, that's kind of pointless. Soz if you misunderstood me.

So how do you go about getting the copyright? And it's only for experimental/ "personal" use right now anyway-

Are the acapellas covered by copyright too? What if it's a cover?

And don't get me wrong I am just experimenting. I don't intend to release the material- look at the legislation for cocaine (or whatever illegal drug) for instance.....different context but same principle.

If something illegal is for personal use and not wholesale distribution in order to make as much money as possible then, although it's technically illegal, it's more about the scientific purposes of the experiment as opposed to the real bane of copyright misuse which is the wholesale distribution (especially for money)

well i meant is that the remix someone did will not be released there wont happen anything, not that its ok to nick shit if its not released  for example, if i would do a remix of one of your tracks and was not planning to release this remix, there would be no harm done imo. Of course stating i remixed song X, i would not be saying that it is my shit. No one will sue you for shit which does not get you $$$$$

If you are not releasing it, thus making money from it, then you dont have to worry.

Life's too short for the petty semantics of money, just enjoy being creative and worry about it the day copyrights become an issue I say!
