Why do people feel the need to prove their "Dubstepness"

I get into with people on the Serato forums like crazy over Dubstep
"Oh I listened to it when it was in its infancy and Dubstep wasn't even a genre yet"
Good for fucking you bud!
Can't we just enjoy and love this genre?
I think it's something thats been missing in all electronic formats that the rest of us can grasp and let go with......
Let's just enjoy it for what it is!!! An escape from the rest of the shitty music out there!

cause nobody likes to be thought of as a sheep. when i first discovered dubstep people always assumed i heard it by some way of dnb, "oh yeah, and youre into dnb, so thats probly where you were coming from". so in my case it just got annoying that people assumed things.
people like to feel special. i got into dubstep early to mid 2007, thats not necesarilly "early" in the game, but i still feel good knowing i heard something, avidly looked around for what it was, and fell in love with it. it was the first genre i found myself, not being introduced to it through a friend, and i felt like it was just finally something i could call my own. i have friends who play house, dnb, and trance, but when i found dubstep it was kinda like "woah. this is what ive been waiting for. this is some rediculous new sound. fat bass, chill vibes. this is for me."
and although i dont go around "bragging" how long ive been listening to dubstep i still like to pretend im a little cooler

cause i was a few years ahead of everyone i know.

most folks have a desire to be seen as authentic.
some go about it the wrong way.
you come to DSF and not the Serato forums to prove how dubstep you are.

Because it's blowing up and now every kid is "Dubstep's biggest fan". So some people feel the need to prove their authenticity and oldskool-ness, and usually come off as pretentious tools by doing so.
I mean, it's easy to feel a little "better" than the kid who just discovered dubstep via Mt Eden or Borgore or whatever, if you've followed the genre for years and feel you have more insight about what is the "good stuff" and what is hype. That's only normal. But it's easy to come off as a douchebag if you insist on letting people know about your "superior coolness".

I don't get why people want to swear some kind of allegiance to any type of music, if someone asks me what I listen to I say "all sorts". Maybe their mums didn't hug them enough.

boohoo
some people like hype-up obnoxious shit, some people like chilled-minimal shit, some people like everything in between
in a sense they are all different styles, which might as well be the same as liking a completely different genre
If you ask me, the people who always go on about "this isn't REAL dubstep, this is midrange wobble shit blablabla" seem a lot more "scene oriented" than the people coming in that take in all sides of it.

Still, my D1 mix makes all the kids go home and cry. When Steam Roller drops it's like nobody's business.
I'm just being an ass by the way, don't take it too serious. I am serious about the mix though.

people like to be part of something. Pretending a music genre is a special little group is a quick and naive way of getting that feeling

Same here, just discovered it by accident browsing some music on the web. Played a sample of a track and thought "Ey up, this sounds fun..".
But sometimes you feel not intimidated, but slightly inferior when some people talk about the "pure" or "original" sound. It's music, not a penis measuring contest (unless it actually is

) We like what we like, and play what we like.. It's not just one "sub-genre" that gets played. Anything that sounds good.. Saying that, I will defend someone I like when they're called crap, and probably annoy someone by saying "Well at least they're not shite or boring like *insert producer*".
You get it with everything though, music, games, stamp collections. Just get on with it..

i dont like people playing on my phone!
its all douchebaggery and internet thuggin. this is how "scenes" are. cats dont want anyone else listening to their precious form of music and then when artists they like makes dime one theyre a sell out. this is how i felt about music when i was 13. got over it though

awhile ago in the production forum i compared this kind of musical elitism to those pointless console wars on gaming forums, and almost straight away I accidentally managed to trigger an argument on whether the ps3 was better than the xbox360
internet people need to chill out a bit :I

the only people who have the right to be like this is people like mala, lofeah kode9 and all the early dubstep producers who make an incredible sound yet have stuck to making music they love without making music that sells, they see there fellow producers making large money and they must feel the urge to be like this alot

This! If anything i mention dubstep as one of my many favourite genres but in general talent depth and substance isn't restricted to one genre alone. It's funny though, now it's blowing up loads of people are flocking to dubstep through social influence yet with anything try to use the "i was here first" to try and retain that sense of individuality.

Same, it has got increasingly harder to find the good stuff lately but i do find it's still there and i've always figured you have to go out there and look for the best music.
