First of all, if theres a topic for this then please redirect me, I tried searching but my internet isn't loading up search results...

Basically I'm not that good with computer specs etc but my current PC cannot hack music production. When I'm making a track it often freezes up or struggles with playback. I recently upgraded my CPU which helped a little bit but the problems still persist.
Ideally I want to set up a music pc, just for production and keep my current PC for standard internet and stuff. I run a cubase orientated system, rewired with fl studio and I use a few vsts. I've been looking around, how does this PC look for my needs?

Can't comment on the pc you suggested mate but are you using an external soundcard? Might make all the difference...

Since posting this I've become suspicious of my soundcard. Its marketed as a mixer with usb capabilities and has no drivers made for it, none came with it and none available to download. I'm using ASIO4ALL to run it but it seems a bit dodgy that it doesn't have its own drivers. I'm gonna borrow my mates mbox and see if it makes any difference which will mean I just have to buy a new soundcard rather than a whole new pc. Thanks for the responses, I'll post back here with solutions/problems I get

I recently got a Lenovo M58P USFF (basically a compact office computer) off the lenovo outlet site (don't know if they have that over there... list was ~us$900 and it was marked a bit under us$450 redistributed)

3 ghz core 2 duo intel
4 gbs ddr3
only 160 gb hdd, but whatever... will upgrade
integrated graphics, but has an open pci slot...
windows 7 pro

Just using integrated sound w/ asio4all since I can't afford a dedicated AI atm and it still hasn't had any problems with numerous plug-ins and free synths (mostly from the free production .zip)

I know I could have (and would have preferred to) build a comp, but I don't have the time or money, and I just needed something to hold me over until I can do that...

Just basically saying I'm happy with this box so far, even though it's not necessarily the most powerful one available.

if you're serious about music production i'd build one. check out this motherboard if you are looking for a low cost board: the ASRock X58 Extreme for about 179.00 USDM and an i7 processor for about 279.00 USDM

gonna be loads cheaper than "audio" pc sites if ya self build, also easier to upgrade and maintain

The tut will teach you everything, if you know how to read (hey some people dont!). NEVER buy marketed specialty PC's, you pay 25-40% more for... a specialty marketed PC.

thanks for all the help/advice/links guys I'm still trying to test to see if its my mixer that is the problem, I borrowed my mates mbox 2 which is a dedicated soundcard only for it to not work because my computer does not have logic, so I've made no progress in understanding the problem. Further more I find it hard to actually describe the problem so I might film it to see if anybody diagnose the problem. I did this around xmas time on the cubase forums and got told it was a cpu issue, upgraded to a dual core and seems to have made no difference
