Its peoples choice to do drugs right? why should it be illegal?
All that making it illegal is doing is funding Gangs and their violence just keeps spreading more and more.
Would making it legal cut down on this?
the truth of the situation is if all drugs were legal kids would be fucking up their lives alot more. especially since all they would need is some homeless guy to go bootleg them some crackrocks/heroin/ meth/ from the local corner store. having them highly illegal discourages many people that would otherwise be curious after some minor pot use or any form of narcotic really . perscriptions and all that. drugs are apart of life but the harder 1's deffinately are not worth the high for all the negative shit that comes with them. any1 that isnt a crack fiend can see this. having them all legal WOULD put alot of drug dealers out of business, but at the expense of fucking up innocent lives. nam sayin????? this is most likely why hardcore drugs will never be legal. as for marijuanna. that shit should of been legal since the fucking beginning of civilization. way worse then alchohol, way less addicting, way less accidents and violence caused from it, way less health problems. having marijuanna legal is pretty retarded considering how many people smoke it. it also makes normal kids like me have to go through drug dealers and always have a sneaking suspicion its laced with something like meth. if i could get it legally from a store i wouldnt have to be paranoid about this shit. also it would be grown properly and not by ametuer growers who do not know how to flush the growth chemicals properly. i wonder how many kids have smoked hardcore chemical laced weed when all they wanted was some natural herb thanks to the govt. (inb4 thanks to themselves for being druggies)

My body is my body. As long as I don't hurt other people, it should be my choice how I use it, not the government's.
By denying us legal access to recreational narcotics, the government actually strip away what it means to be a "free" human. Tens of millions of people inhabit a country where morally they feel they do nothing wrong, but where they have to reassess all their actions when passing a police officer in the street. Is that how you build a happy, trusting society?
It's time for society to grow up and get a proper perspective on drug use, something that seems common to almost every single human society that has ever existed. I really don't think we're going to stop people wanting to play with their brains any time soon.

this sort of soft libertarianism seems so basic on a logical level. in my own home, doing what I feel like with other consenting adults, i don't really need to be interrupted by a moralist paramilitary group like the police. with a state the size and complexity of modern Britain that's not a compelte argument however because everything effects everything else. Wearing a seatbelt can be considered the same way, if I want to go through the front of my windscreen who are you to stop me? However there are mechanisms in place such as people to come and pick the bits up and put them together again that you can't opt out of and so the state considers itself as having a say in your personal sovereignty as it is inevitable bound up in the outcome.
Thus pot smoking becomes society's issue rather than a personal one because the consequences- paying for the 1 in 1000 fuck up/ drugs crime / drugs ed etc are shared. This is sufficient justification for a shitload of people you'll never meet to decide they know what's best for you and legislate to enforce their view. The truth of whether dope fucks you up becomes irrelevant because there's a large, silent, and impossible to find group called middle england who through tradition and social structure have designated dope as an evil and believe that as a whole society can proscribe acceptable behavioural norms, and by their own logic they're right and seem unlikely to abandon that view. sitting back and letting other people get on with stuff you disapprove of is not very British. We (politicians and newspapers) like to evangelise.
edit: waste thread that doesn't deserve the repetition of boring arguments.

It's a tough question. There are certainly benefits but there are some people who should never take drugs.
If people were educated on drugs properly in schools the situation would be different. They fill your heads with lies.

Do illegal drugs necessarily need to be made legal? I mean they are already available in plentiful supply and the authorities largely turn a blind eye to personal use.
If you want to take them they are there.
And would you really want to legitimise the drug cartels?

With drugs illegal, only crime and the government benefit, whilst the average consumer suffers
Anyway, humans are like a bad shit that ended up on the floor instead of in the toilet. Can guarantee guns will be legalised in the UK before chemicals are
Ban religion instead!

If they were legal, there wouldn't be drug cartels. There would be no need and more importantly, insufficient profit. There would also be a lot less stigma attached to drugs.
Just because something is plentifully available does not mean everyone will suddenly take it up. Most of us have easy access to petrol. Do you see masses of people sniffing petrol?
Instead of putting effort into law enforcement, they should concentrate on making safer, improved recreational drugs. If you get a better response from a legal drug and it's better and with less negative effects than an illegal one, which would you pick? It'd probably be a better success story than viagra.

By legitimising them, you'd force them to act correctly - no more need for drug running, just farmers and business people producing and selling reliable product. The gangsters who maintain their monopolies through muscle would quickly realise that other things are more powerful in a free market.
The only need for the law to get involved is if people are selling incorrectly labelled products and misleading/poisoning the consumer.

People could always get a license, much like how the BBC works
Maybe it's coming to the point to test the democracy and see what the majority of the country desires, once the polictical die hard anti drug pensioners die off

I'm not sure it's the pensioners who are bothered to be honest.

If all drugs in general were legalised, there would obviously be a bit of chaos.
If they were monitored and stuff then alot of the crap would be cut out. But we all know thats not gonna happen.

The way I feel is that drugs should be legalised, but because they haven't been illegal for so many years that now we have reached a point of relatively no return as the system will never allow them to be fully legalised.
If they were legal from the start then we would have far less problems.
