So you're playing some dubstep for a friend one day, now suddenly they're hooked and ask you to send them a bunch of tunes. How do you bring them up to speed?

That's not a very diverse sampling of dubstep sounds, but I respect your opinion...

Give them a big diverse list of names, have them sort it out for themselves.

This is a cool mix I found that is sort of like a musical time line that starts with the origins of dubstep and works its way to the present over the course of two hours with some short interludes where the DJ gives a little history.

Dubstep to the future. This is a 2 hour journey through the beginnings up until today. It's not definitive or comprehensive (how could it be at 2 hours?). It is however a nice introduction and a fun listen to those that already know. From El-B to Joker. From Horsepower Productions to Kryptic Minds. From Digital Mystikz to Wu-Tang: Enter the Dubstep.

This really. I just started listening to mixes/radio/searching around on youtube/free tracks from unknown producers. I'd tell them to find it on their own not to be a dick or anything but just because musical taste varies so much and your favorite artist/song might be absolute shit to another person.

haha foiled! a pretty poor joke at that. . .

i'd give said person a few albums to listen to e.g

Distance - My Demons / Repercussions
Silkie - City Limits Vol.1
Skream - Skream! (maybe a few Skreamizms as well)
Benga - Diary Of An Afro Warrior
Vex'd - Degenerate
Boxcutter - Oneiric
Burial - Burial / Untrue
Scuba - A Mutual Antipathy / Triangulation
Headhunter - Nomad
Martyn - Great Lengths
2562 - Aerial / Unbalance
Zomby - One Foot Ahead Of The Other
Peverelist - Jarvik Mindstate
King Midas Sound - Waiting For You. . .

and i'd also tell them to look out for a few labels, because i always find following labels often gets you onto new artists:

Apple Pips
Deep Medi
Tempa
Tectonic
Hotflush
Hyperdub
Brainmath
Hessle
Punch Drunk
Hemlock
Ramp
Naked Lunch
Soul Jazz Records
Skull Disco
Daphne
Immerse
Deleted Scenes

at this point i reckon they'd have an allright selection to get through :e:

Someone posted up a 10 min dubstep megamix. I thought it was pretty good for someone to get a grasp on big tracks in ten mins. Any further than that, music is best explored itself.
