make lovely techno synth stabs i.e scuba, basic channel
like in headhunter's and djunya's - El Presidente
They're found on really old dub tech tracks, so its analogue synthesis... has anyone made some patches? Only way I can get a little bit close is by layering various sounds, but it's just not right.

Re: make lovely techno synth stabs i.e scuba, basic channel
There are a few threads on this and on DOA. I will try to remember to look and post later.
Re: make lovely techno synth stabs i.e scuba, basic channel
Should be easy. I can't remember the exact way I've done it and I've been without equipment to produce with for well over 6 months now, but from what I remember, the key is several square waves, an octave apart, perhaps a hint of white noise, slight low-pass filtering and fast envelope settings. Add delay, reverb and modulate low-pass filter to taste.

filtered rhodes/electric pianos are good for these....
play around with the decay/release and filter cutoff, get some nice prgressive sounds going.....
if you want to make it, saw waves, which are then low passed work quite well.... I used sample a reese in my last song and it sounded it pretty awesome :-p

Re: make lovely techno synth stabs i.e scuba, basic channel
I do this in like every song hahaha I love Basic Channel and all the dubstep/techno stuff inspired by them on applepips etc. I make them in Ableton Operator but you can use any two osc synth really.
What I do is have both oscs set to a saw wave and make one an octave higher than the other. Low pass the synth down really low but make sure the filter envelope is up a wee bit so you get the stab sound.
Then put some really light chorus, a reverb set to about 4-5 seconds and some delay if you want (Ableton Filter Delay is ace with this but also Tal DubDelay). Then as others have said modulate the low pass filter for that dubtechno effect. If your synth has white noise also use a bit of that too.
I sometimes use a bandpass filter instead of a low pass because you get an even more extreme effect when modulating it. Finally use a degrader effect or a saturator to give it some warmth and compress slightly. Then you've got a semidecent dub techno chord

minor chords plus filter envelopes are the key

Re: make lovely techno synth stabs i.e scuba, basic channel
basically they are known as stacks.
you can either program them as minor chords (as the fella above said)
or you can create them using a synth with 3 oscillators
the basic principle is to have a root note (usually the the bottom note) set to 0 (no tuning)
2nd oscillator you could tune to Eb (+3)
3rd to +7
this would make a minor chord basically - then whatever you play would be a minor chord - for the sounds you mentioned you can try combinations of oscillators, maybe saws or chuck a square in - filter it down a bit with low pass - bit of resonance and boom.
only thing is you are instantly limiting yourself tonally and you will notice that a lot of those tracks that use that minor stack chord basically sound the same.
it's a good thing to add to a tune sparsely in my opinion
good luck!

also rob papen predator is killer for those type of sounds

Interesting, did not know that! you may have just made my life easier

Certainly is. Any stab stuff sounds really nice from Predator.om unit wrote:also rob papen predator is killer for those type of sounds
Re: make lovely techno synth stabs i.e scuba, basic channel
big ups for posting that tutorial!
Re: make lovely techno synth stabs i.e scuba, basic channel
sample old records, sections without strong hits of whatsoever nature. just some sonic material with a lot of harmonic frequncies content. no matter the style, sample everything. play with filters, rev+delay. done! you'll be amazed at the results, just dig for your own tone!!!
