There is a plethora of threads here that have information with 99% of what you need, better yet the search button as this the thread title has been asked a million times, and the bass in question is that of formant and vowel filters, a sound that has been overly used and sounds the same everytime.

Ahh right, thanks for pointing me in the right direction and sorry for my ignorance. I'm new to this forum. >.<
What Vocal Filter do you think Funtcase is using and what was the original bass sound made by that was put though it?
Cheers Astral!

the specific bass sound your talking about is "downsampled" using a bit crusher. formant filters gives you that "YA YA" type sound but the distortion is coming from a bit crusher. all standard fair but ya give those a go. (funtcase uses reason from what i hear so im guessing the bit crusher in there does the trick)

Ok cheers jsills, I have a VST called Bitcrusher and I'm playing with it now. I've messed about the with three settings, one of which is Downsampling and tried it all across the scale and can't get that YA YA sound... can you elaborate?

I know he uses Reason, and you're unable to pull in VST's then you already have literally everything he uses for his basses if that's any help.

Never understood this, as i find the sub heavy dubstep to be just as repetitive.

The ya ya ya sound is from whats known as a formant filter, exactly how it works im not sure, and i've only ever used them built into synths. However i think i've seen other people mention independant ones so have a google, as stated above they make a very similar and obvious noise so once you get one that shouldn't be too hard to do.
The bitcrusher is used to make the the bass less clean, but in a way thats quite hard to describe... It sounds more like its playing out of a gameboy basically, you'l get more obvious frequency steps and a crunchy/gargling sort of noise... I find using bitcrushers without making a mess very difficult, so i reckon you might wanna put a bit of practice into it.
The real story is the bass sound he uses originally, which is kinda why they're pro and we're not

Its not about just saying do this this and this and the song is yours, you gotta spend a bit of time with a synth and produce you're own individual crazyness... I know at first it sounds alot like we're holding out on you, in like a you can handle the truth way, but once you start fiddling you'll see why everyone says it.
As a final tip, try not to start too many of these want to sound like someone thread, consider the music a bit more, think of the style you wanna go for and ask some select and insightful questions... Consider that if we all knew how to make that kinda music we'd be cashing in on it too...

Yeah dude, I was acutally just about to recommend that... it has that 'Filthy Wobble' preset, everyone knows dayn just uses filthy wobble and then automates the 'Melody' knob... Fuck subtractive and effect based synthesis, trust me, Dayn and Dala rock HamVSTi all day.
You might wanna get the Sumo VST too dude, between Ham and Sumo, you just cant get fatter, meatier basses.

You guys are saints.
Thanks so much for all your help. I completely understand what ya'll mean:
I need to find my own niche sound and not copy others.
In the meantime though...
Formant Filters & Vowel Filters.
Where are they available from?

Can anyone send me the files over MSN or something?
I've got good distorters; Camel Crusher & Bit Crusher.
Ta.
