Quitting cigs.

I smoke almost a pack a day and i'm getting fed up with cigs. They cost me a shit ton of money that I don't have. When I run out of cigs I go searching for butts that I have in my ash tray and smoke them even if they have turned brown and have started to rot. And on top of all that i'm killing myself slowly with these nasty things.
I have been smoking for almost 4 years and it feels like I have some sort of hole in my throat when I take a drag (even though I don't).I want to quit but it's such a bitch! When I go without a cig for atleast an hour my throat starts craving one really bad, I know it sounds weird but it's like my throat starts to tingle and I get the craving.
Does anyone have some useful tips on how to quit these nasty fuckers? I have tried nicorette, haven't tried the patch but like I said I don't have a lot of money right now. I have tried smoking weed instead but that doesn't really help because then I just get baked out of my mind and end up craving a cig even more, same with liquor.
Any help would be appreciated.

I found it fairly easy to quit and only really got cravings some months after, I bought a pack of cigarettes last week but never smoked them! So um.... advice, well first of all I wouldn't post threads about it that you intend to read as it's just making you crave one. It's actually got me slightly on edge just replying to this. Personally I don't think any of the patches and stuff are worth the money, you're not actually quitting you're just replacing the addiction with something else, which you'll need to ween yourself from, plus they're expensive! Just go cold turkey!
Oh and after two or three weeks you'll probably get a real bad cough as you start to hack up loads of lung butter, and then shortly after you'll notice food tastes better and stronger, you'll be £30 a week better off. I had smoked since I was 14 and I am now I am closer to 30 than 20; wish I never started.
G'luck!

I know smoking weeds not the same, but I still smoked baccy in my joints, for like 3 years straight, 2 years prior to that at weekends n that... I quit about a month ago, pretty easily... Went out and got pissed, didn't smoke that night, first time in 3 years... woke up sunday morning and just said to myself, I'm not buying any green today, fairplay the hangover contributed to it, but the next day I thought, hey, I've gone 2 days... lets keep it up, and here I am, a month on, smoke free... I do however drink abit more than I used to, usually have a drink atleast once a week now, where as before it was once a fortnight, if that, once a month more like... I do wanna ring man and get some bud when I'm abit tispy though, I'd love to smoke a zoot every night, but I know it's for the better... 20th April will be the day I have another smoke, jus bud though, no way on earth am I having any of that dirty addicitive nicotine again, ever!

fuck every time i see this thread title i want a smoke..
i think the best way is to just not.. seems obvious but think about the first smoke u have in the day, if u can avoid the urge you find that you actually feel better than if you had smoked it, every time u get a craving its cuz ur going thru withdrawl from the last one thus if u can break the cycle by not having that first one it helps alot. also try buying shitty smokes ( if u dont enjoy smokin em ur less likely to ) or if ur really a fiend get one of those imitation things that you just puff on to simulate the act of smoking but w/e the nicc

Smoke a pack of Newport 100s in one sitting, followed by a pack of Marlboro Red 100s.

A couple of people I know who were addicted to cigs said those e-cigarettes are great for cutting down and eventually quitting. I don't think they were up to a pack a day so I'm not sure if it would be as effective. It's a lot better for you though. Not good for you just better. I think besides the nicotine, the body is craving all those other chemicals in cigs as well...

ive been smoking for 4 years, and am in the same boat as you. sometimes my chest feels like someones standing on it, and im fed up of coughing up shit all the time. the money factor is a big deal aswell, i did quit for a month and really noticed the saving, not getting out a tenner every couple of days was a good feeling.
the only way to quit is will power, although i know a lot of people who swear by that Allen Carr book... dont know if anyones read it here who can back this up?!
worst thing for me is drinking.... on a night out as soon as i have a beer in my hand it feels like somethings missing, also dont help that pretty much everyone i know smokes and its either stand inside alone most of the night, or go out and join them.

They have more than likely been smoked (not by me).

When I use to smoke there was nothing social about it. I was straight old school addicted, like in the morning I would put on yesterdays dirty clothes and go out to smoke before I did anything else. I tried quitting by willpower and I would get to like 1130 AM and want to kill babies so I just smoked instead. Going without cigarettes sucked so bad it wasn't even worth it to try quitting.
Then I took Chantix and quit. Haven't smoked since. Only problem is it's expensive. But quitting was one of the best things I ever did because now I can still enjoy Dubwar after 2am when they don't let people back in who go out to smoke.

i reckon if all the media and government said smoking wasn't addictive no-one would have a problem giving up

I reckon its routine. Everytime I'm in a certain situation that I'm used to smoking in then I'll do it. I don't normally smoke when I'm at home I can have about 5 cigarettes throughout the day if I'm at home. When I'm outside though, walking home, waiting for buses, talking to people or drinking I'll have a cigarette and these things I'm doing a lot. However if I'm not then I have no urge to smoke. I think you have to get into a routine where you're not smoking when you would normally smoke. Although I haven't managed this yet. Also if we really wanted too you would.
