Okay i'm after some headphones and i've done a little research and heard numerous recommendations. The Sony Xb series look sick for bass, but you'd look like a spanner walking round with them on. Look like giant donuts strapped to your head. But yeah i've been looking at the Sony MDR-V700's in the Dj range not sure whether these are any good, especially with the focus being on bass and low frequencies. And with sony, i may only be paying for the brand name. Also heard the Sennheiser HD range are pretty good. Any recommendations? Thanks

So kinda have the same question as Weedkeepa, headphones with proper bass (no over-kill)?
I know Ultrasone, Grado and such are pretty good but I ain't spending 140 quid on a pair of headphones.

O and it's for listening to dubstep and dnb not for any production work.

The cheaper ATH-m30 and ATH-m40 both excellent too at about £30 and £50 respectively, so you could save yourself some cash and pick up either of these, which are better sounding than the HD25s or you can pick up the ATH-M50s for about £100, and blow your mind!

The obvious advantage of the Senheisers is they are smaller and lighter, I recently acquired some Senheiser HD25s for taking out and about, but I've permenently lent them to my girlfriend, to me personally they don't sound amazing, they're not bad but I'd rather take out the M50s even though they're hench!

They have a frequency response of 5hz - 28,000 Hz (realistically probably about 30Hz) . Plenty of bass, anything below 90Hz is subbass (that number varies on who you ask mind). They will be 100x bassier, fuller and than the Skull Candy poo!

I used to own the ATH-M20s until I sat on them and broke them with my massive arse. Now I have the ATM-M50s. Both great value.

Audio Technica have produced a very accurate-sounding, enclosed headphone capable of more than enough sound level for serious monitoring or mixing work. Because these phones are enclosed, not only do you get a very solid bass end, you also get very little sound leakage -- an important consideration when recording or overdubbing vocals or acoustic instruments. In the project studio, the ATH-M40s should meet all headphone needs both sides of the glass; my only remaining reservation is the lack of a plug-in lead. Even then, I guess it would be easy enough to fit a small in-line stereo plug and socket into the lead, close to the headphones, if you felt very strongly about it. In a nutshell, though, these are some of the better-sounding enclosed phones on the market.

Either way you'll be happy, the HD25s aren't terrible, and if you never hear the M50s, you'll be happy with the HD25s.

Thanks man, i'm looking tempted by the m50's However if you look back to my original post i was at first interested by the sony MDR-700's.
In comparing both the M50's and the MDR-700's the stats are as follows:

MDR-V700
Driver Diameter: 50 mm
Frequency Response: 5 - 30,000 Hz
Sensitivity: 107 dB
Impedance: 24 ohms

ATH-M50
Driver Diameter: 45 mm
Frequency Response: 15 - 28,000 Hz
Sensitivity: 99 dB
Impedance: 38 ohms

In comparison the M50's have a larger impedance value where as the V700's sensitivity, FR, driver diameter are greater. What does this mean?

To be honest, you can't actually tell how good headphones or speakers are by the stats, for example, Skull Candy, who make the worst headphones of all time, claim their headphones have a dynamic range of 5hz to 50k or something silly, but they sound utterly terrible.

But for the record:
Frequency response is the theoretical range of the headphones, 5Hz is really low, anything below 90hz is sub bass, anything below 20hz you can't hear but you can feel.

Driver Diameter is the physical size of the speaker driver.

Sensitivity, lower is better, but not too low or else they'll be too quiet, more sensitivity allows more dynamic range and better sound quality. That's why you'll find in the cheaper ATH M-30s have a slightly higher dB.

Impedance is something that is more relevant to big speakers, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

If you're truly undecided Your best bet is to try and listen to both pairs in the shop and see which you like most failing that, read reviews from good sources, not from consumers and not gadget mags, try proper audiophile journals like sound on sound.

Trust me, I've been through them all and nothing comes close. Etymotic Research in-ear buds are good too, but cancel sound quite effectively, so good luck djing with them. Go Sennheiser.

To the OP...

If you are considering Sony Headphones, I would go for the MDR-V6's. I know lots of people here prefer the Sennheisers, but personally I use the V6's.
