“Sub-bass is where it’s at,” proclaims low frequency–loving Torontonian Bombaman. Also going by the name Matt Carl (which still differs from his birth certificate, but hey, everyone wears a mask of some sort these days) the fast-rising producer tells me he digs it “clean, clear, loud and in your face.”

The St. Catharines native grew up listening to music heavy on both the drums and the bass, namely hip-hop, metal and jungle. He’s been a drummer for 13 of his 26 years, having played “everything from Godspell to jazz” while in high school. Carl played in rock bands, learned to DJ and experimented with music software, going on to study at Recording Arts Canada in 2003.

It was after he’d graduated and moved to Toronto that Carl met people like Brandon Sek and producer XI, got deep into dubstep, and started making music he cared to share.

“I had been making jungle for a while and for some reason it just never sounded the way I wanted it to so I never played it to anybody,” he says. “When I got [production software Ableton Live] four years ago, things turned around and I could finally make stuff the way I wanted to because Ableton works the way my brain works.

“Then, when I started making dubstep, it all just clicked. Everything I started making two years ago made me feel like, ‘Yeah, this is sick.’ It was music I was proud to give to people around me.”

The man who became Bomba is also deeply into the music of producers close at hand, specifically XI (the two collaborate as Loetech) and Egyptrixx.

“Those two blow my mind — they make some of the best music,” exclaims Carl. “I’m heavily influenced by what they’re doing, although it may not come across in my music. I’m always reverse-engineering their tracks to see, ‘How the fuck did [they] do that?’”

Other producers are increasingly asking themselves the same of this expletive-prone producer. Bombaman’s thick, booming productions — generally clocking in at dubstep’s core tempo of 140 beats per minute, the happy middle ground between house and jungle — have been released on a number of underground labels, including La Dubstep Nostra, Lo Dubs, Aufect and Electrostimulation.

“I do this because I’m really tired of what I hear,” Carl says. “I get sent a lot of really bad music so when I make this shit, it’s so that I can go out and play it. It’s not that I don’t have any interest in putting out music, it’s just not the reason that I make it.”

Spoken like a man on the cusp. These days, Bombaman tracks like this year’s “Exia” and his bootleg remix of Enur’s “Calabria” are receiving play from international biggies like Crookers, Rusko and Diplo. The latter, in fact, put forward Bombaman’s name for remixing duties on Laidback Luke and Diplo’s single, “Hey!,” newly released on England’s Southern Fried. This heavily-blogged reworking showcases the dubstep-electro hybrid Carl has lately been attacking dancefloors with.

“That was the first track I’d made in two years that wasn’t 140bpm. I totally went for something different and it turns out to have worked in my favour. A whole bunch of guys are playing it, so I think this is the path I might want to start taking. Everything has been on a real upward slope lately. It’s all falling into place.”

Not only is Carl being asked to create remixes — with mixes for San Fran dubstep artists DZ (originally from Ottawa) and The Spit Brothers in the works — his DJ bookings have picked up. He’s gone from “playing once or twice a month” in T.O. to touring much of North America and now being booked in large local venues including The Guvernment and This Is London.

“I never pictured those crowds having any interest in what I’m doing because I thought my shit was too weird,” Carl laughs. “At This Is London though, everyone was dancing. Apparently it’s not that weird.”

Given that his sets consist largely of his own material, Carl is looking forward to producing more originals. He’s just finished a track with Chicago producer Steve Gerard and is currently contemplating “new ways to mangle sub-bass.”

“It seems to me that every time I try something new, it turns into something bigger,” he says. “Hopefully that foreshadows where things are going to go. I’m kind of A.D.D. about everything; I do what I’m interested in at the moment and I’m always thinking ‘What’s new?’”

tha Doc

tha Doc began showing a interest in the edm culture in the mid 90's. He then fell in love with the scene the first time he put an ear to Drum and Bass.
Born a Utah resident, now residing in Indiana, tha Doc began flourishing his name throughout the club scene beginning in January 06. He made a much anticipated appearance at a local major Midwest tour called DnB Liberation Front tour. Since then, tha Doc has made a name for himself by performing at events with the likes of big name artists, such as, John B., Dieselboy, Juan Atkins and Random Movement, just to name a few.
He holds a residency at, and helps organize Juxtapoze in Indianapolis and has performed at numerous clubs and events throughout the Midwest and East coast. Touching down in such places as Chicago, Buffalo, Florida, Ohio and Detroit, this guy shows no signs of stopping.
In the past two and a half years, tha Doc has been working away on the production front of things. With a number of tunes released on Dubfront Records and Incognito Records as well as other labels looking to grab up some of what he conjurs up and brings to the table. And as one half of the production team behind 'Paranoid Inc.' tha Doc is most definitely one to keep a eye on now and in the future.

Parallel

PARALLEL is an outstanding producer reigning from Indianapolis who specializes in the more experimental, drum oriented side of the Jungle/Drum&Bass genre. His work incorporates many different styles and sounds from dark to light along with dub, dancehall samples laid over heavy sub bass pressure and intricate drumwork. PARALLEL is also one of the 3 American members of the breakbeat masterminds, the NSF crew (Neurotic Sound Foundation) from Germany. PARALLEL recently released an ep on Digibeat http://www.digibeatmusic.org with his NSF partner and protege SUMONE (Planet Mu), that has been receiving massive reviews from the underground community. With forthcoming releases signed to Subtle Audio, Savory Audio, Materlizm, Pinecone Moonshine, and as one half of the production team behind Paranoid Inc., PARALLEL is definitely making a lot of noise in 2010.

Bones Jones vs bone loc ROC
Allied, Betamorph, Digital Terror Recordings, Jungle Bums
Image

raised in the Adirondacks by a pack of wolves, a young naive jones cub was ripped out of his environment and thrown into the dark, swampy dungeons indigenous to the concrete jungle known as rochester ny. there he heard loud offensive sounds that came thru old soup cans and saw a bunch of natives doing their best to move in unison w these offensive sounds. shortly after befriending one of the natives, bones learned that these sounds were "music", "drum and bass music" specifically. this "music" started to hurt his head and made it really hard to pay attention to what all of the really interesting "ravers" he was meeting were saying, but for some reason he felt the need to hear more of it. it was many moons after that that a bones who was somewhat adapted to his new environment yet still naive to the real meaning of "drum and bass" went into a dungeon that had a few soup cans on the floor that were noticably larger than the ones on sticks that were there and in every other dungeon. these new, larger soup cans quickly started making sounds that he could not only hear but also feel moving through the air, and all of the sounds that came out of the cans on sticks combined w the floor can sounds to create one even bigger sound that filled up the entire world around him. at that very moment, jones stuck his middle finger in the air, said "fuck yeah, thats what the fuck i'm taking about" and knew that he was gonna totally jones for the shit from that point forward, right down to his core skeletor, or "bones". "haha, and i thought it should be called "drum and treble"", bones said to himself. while this is one of the early stages of evolution for bones, he has now learned how to push buttons that cost lots of money that correspond to these offensive sounds (and even how to record them!), jones often takes a wormhole back to this sacred place where he is in his element, holed up in a dirty dungeon, inhaling asbestos, and smoke from dried plants cultivated in the area by local "junglists".
