I'm just interested in knowing if generally dubstep producers come from a pure classical background or essentially a dance music background. (You or other big producers).

i heard Dawn Treader was classically trained, he aint that big but he's getting there

d1 i reckon, recall hearing it on dubfiles.. might be wrong.

This is only my opinion, but a better question might be "who's had formal musical training beyond compulsory instrument lessons when they were a kid?" There are some tunes I've heard where it was obvious that the composer had a decent grasp on theory, usually leaning more towards jazz (since it has more in common with the pop idiom of which dance music is a part.)

People who are genuinely, innately talented at making music will often excel in multiple stylistic categories - that's all I'm saying.

Apparently Rusko was "born into a musical family" but I really can't tell after listening to Woo Boost

i dont think musical training really means shit. albeit i played classical piano for about ten years but if u want to make a certain mood, just listen to loads of other tracks in the same vein and ull soon be able to create something similar, and im talkin relatively complex chord progressions

but someone with a detailed knowledge of music theory doesnt need to a) pick up things from other tracks to create a mood and b) can compose without even hearing what the music is that they're composing

its fucking SICK, they can just write an entire piece of music and know what it will sound like without even hearing any instruments play them, thats the point of music theory, some say it take away from the more intuitive and improvisational aspect of music, you just need to hear jazz to know thats not true

i was kinda going for dark and melodical here, ive had a bit of music theory

i mean more like i can hear chords in my head, and play em out no problem. but to start inventing ur own chord progressions it helps to listen all sorts of genres of music.. ie if u want to write something sexy, listen to a bit of pharrell or isley brothers and ull be well on ur way

sounds like you're making electronic metal, thats what i get from a lot of this style, Chasing Shadows is the ultimate example, Distance to a certain extent

nice tho, i quite rate the tunes, prod seems nice aswell from what i can tell

the album Bloodred Hatred is excellent, Disbeliever is a sick track, i still rate it now, and i was into metal years ago n havent beeen for a while, lyrics are shocking tho!

Well for my part, I'm coming from an intensively classical background. I've been studying both the harpsichord and organ (maybe all the filthiness comes from there hahaha) and music theory and ear training at college and still doing it. Anyone think it's essential ?

its absolutely not essential but if you really want to do music there's no reason not to finish your degree. it will help you out in the ways mentioned above, altho you should def be listening to the type of music you want to make if only to avoid retreading familiar ground.

Bwahaha I KNOW but it's fun sometimes to focus on effects when all day long you practice hard 3 to 4 voice pieces =__=. But still it's in E minor lol.
