Sorry for the caplocked title, but everyone else does the same thing with theirs and I just wanna make sure this post doesn't fall by the wayside...

So long story short; I'm a haggard old geez who for the usual boring grown-up reasons just doesn't get to go out much at all. A lot of times I find new music/artists when I hear them in mixes, though - and it's increasingly obvious that a lot of you are the same way.

With this in mind, all of us would [I'd think] appreciate having a monthly vote-off for a Mix O' The Month, complete with a poll, so we don't have to waste our time going through 80 billion shit mixes just to find a couple good ones (not that we have that many bad mixes, but... )

Nope, 'cause people would equate good=recognized name, there's enough mixes on this board that get ignored already, a popularity contest like that would only emphasize...

That had occurred to me - that there's a lot of lemmings out there - but that also already happens with these mixes, and in all honesty big names don't always mean big mixes. I'd like to think that there's enough folks, though, with decent taste (and who are known for such) that their nominations would hopefully skew things towards being more objective. Regardless tho, if it helps cut the treacle in any way it'd be an improvement.

Or maybe we simply either elect or rotate a guest judge/judges (Joe Nice, Kidlogic, Macc, etc. - I'm looking at you here)...?

Alternately, perhaps a categorical breakdown (i.e. "filthy fuckin' facefilthfucker!" mixes vs. the "deep oooooh yeah bitches, feel how smoov I am" mixes) could work but that seems like a loaded proposition and ultimately just helps the factionalization that's already in progress here.

I think that from an archival or historical POV the idea of having a monthly favorite mix is still a good idea though, if nothing else than for a reference point on where we've been, where we are, and where we're going...

I really like this idea, I agree that a poll might be the wrong way to implement it.

Maybe there could be just a running thread were people post their favorite mix of the week/month?

I have to agree, while in theory that might be plausible, actual application could be miss-understood as a Critique rather than a Compliment. Some people have very sensitive feelers when it comes to their Mixes. Just Mah Opinion. Nothing More. Have an Awesome Day!

Why create an unnecessary form of competition? Is it not enough to just appreciate a mix for being a wonderful mix? Simply put, i think that adding a new layer of "who has the best" will only give rise to individuals trying to one up another. In the end, i don't think this is what Dubstep should be about, or any form of art for that matter. Let us enjoy the music for what it is, and leave it at that.

I don't know if the point is to create a competitive space. I think that would be kind of counterproductive.

My experience has been this. I come on this board alot looking for music. Sometimes I feel brave enough to try out something completely new. Sometimes I don't.

If there was a place were people could discuss the mixes that they really liked, it would be a good resource, something to read through and be pointed in the right direction.

If you don't want to frame your musical explorations with other peoples opinions, fantastic. Ignore the thread completely, except maybe to post your own recommendations from time to time.

For me, the bottom line is that some of these mixes are life changing works of art, and I really don't want to miss it when it happens.

Come to think of it, I think I would prefer to have a mix hall of fame/best of discussion than mix of the month poll.

And, while I am on the topic, I am still upset that DJ Merc's Reverse the System mix got no love at all on this board. That mix is in my top 5 of all time. I don't get it.

Couldn't have said it better. This would definitely NOT be another contest - rather, it'd be a democratic reflection of what people like around here with an opportunity to discuss why, and in the larger context of mixes in general since they have dynamics & character all their own (just like individual songs.)

As for the idea of having it be a running thread - eh, dunno. Things get murky in some of those 97 page beastly-huge running threads. I think doing it weekly would be pushing it too - not enough time to properly listen to enough stuff and compare notes or whatever. As it is, you know some of them are gonna turn into gigantic flameouts anyway, that's just how it is around here. By having discrete monthly threads they can run on infinitely without damaging other months' threads.

This should just be a way to acknowledge, discuss, and understand the so-called "pick of the pick" - regardless of who it came from, egos, all that. (yeah, I know... good luck right?) Critique is fine too; how else are developing DJ's gonna get better unless they get feedback on elements like selection, flow, vibe, etc.? There'll always be asshats who don't know WTF they're talking about spouting hate but if you give thoughtful people who are paying attention (and not just bandwagon bashing) a forum to help others who genuinely want to find good new sounds, I think it''s a win-win situation for the DJ's, their selections, and us listeners.

I agree with both ÆIUM and Alpha, a section for all time hit mixes would be great. More helpful than anything. Wish there had been one when I first got here. But then again half the fun here is searching through tons of Mixes and finding maybe two that blow your dome! You know? Just MTC.

yeah, it would be a great idea because sometimes I miss out on good mixes posted here coz there's just too many to listen to them all. as for the arguments AGAINST this idea, I doubt you people think before posting

Yeah - I can't even tell you how many big mixes I've found like 6 months after they've come out, and only because someone was kind enough to tip me off to 'em!

And to anyone who might say, "just watch the thread views count" - sorry, tried that. Just as often as anything the thread's devolved into hamfucking alpacadom or brostep hate or [ insert another DSF in-joke/cliché here ].

So anyone who's worried about the possible negatives, let's get constructive and not cuntstructive and help us sort it out.

Hey guys, just found this thread while searching for something else, (flattered to be nominated in such company alphacat, thanks)...

maybe the solution is off this site? Somewhere you could colaboratively post links to the mixes you like here, either linking back to the board or directly to the mix. There are ways to do group blogs on places like Posterous, or maybe even a better suited group blog site. Make it so the main rule is you cant post your own mixes and you have to post a review when you link so we know you actually listened to it... something like that.

I really like this idea of a democratic suggestion and peer review to help cut through the noise of the board. Post ideas for sites or services... hell maybe even a twitter group account somehow or tumblr or something... Ive been using this for my podcast and you can post to it by sending an email, could work...

Sounds like a lame popularity contest to me.

I am so down with a mix of the month thing.... idk i post my mix on here... get a TON of hits all over soundcloud... but very very few reviews.. I know shits epic and banging. I really value others opinions and I think it would be nice to have some polls for members mixes..
