the problem with dubstep productions today..

the problem is simple, Producers aren't sampling anymore, sampling and "crate digging". In the early 90s. Rave music was aboout 75% sampled sounds from hip hop. The rest of it was synths and soundmodules. All dubstep now is presets from VSTi's. that's why it all sounds the same, I'd like to hear more vairity. It's bad to listen to a dubstep tune and go, I know that preset off Albino or whatever.

Doesn't have to be actual crate digging, you can sample mp3s I guess. I think people need to listen to more 20th century music. there's still more good fish to catch from the 20th century.

problem with that is not everyone has turntables or proper equipment to do that, whereas almost anyone can get a free trial version of a program and start making tracks.

Word.

It all sounds too digital and flat. It his no feeling (see Burial) and no vibe! thats why a lot of the guys who were doing it in 2005 when they were new to it, sounded muddy, but it was good music!

Most dubstep has become the sum of it's parts and them parts are nowadays VST sounding VST's.

Yea its weird, hip hop especially has so many samples to get into that fit dubstep so well. I'm working on a tune that samples Nas, Halftime, the line that goes ''cos I'm an ace when I face the bass'' - cheesey as, I know, but I can't believe I've never heard that sampled before, it's not like its even from an obscure artist/album!

Eh... I'm not sure about your logic on this one. The problem with most dubstep productions today isn't a lack of sampling; it's a lack of originality... compounded by the fact that barriers to entry have been all but obliterated, so neither passion nor individuality or even talent are prerequisites to releasing music. IMHO in 2010 you could say the same about most popular genres of music...

2 solutions to this; 1 easy, 1 challenging.

easy: listen to better music.

challenging: take up the fight and write better music.

not a solution to anything, ever: complaining about the state of music on the interwebticles.

I don't think it sounds digital so much as just predictable.

I mean, practically, dubstep is no more digital than it was in 2005, I think it's just that everyone (including the deep / experimental guys) have learnt a lot of tricks and techniques for getting particular sounds, so there are a lot fewer interesting accidents...
