onethirtybpm.com monthly dubstep column - JUNE ONLINE NOW

Post by andrew ryce » Wed Apr 28, 2010 7:51 am

Hi everyone,

This is basically spam but that's what this board is for, innit?

I (as well as another writer) have been doing a monthly column starting this year covering our favourite dubstep (really not just dubstep, pretty much any kind of bass music) releases along with interviews and reviews (we've also had a few mixes and are getting plenty more!). I figured I might as well share it with the DSF massive (I lurk here occasionally), get some feedback. The last two have had over thirty reviews each, we try to cover as much of the stuff we like that we possibly can.

Our latest one just went up this week: http://onethirtybpm.com/2010/04/26/the- ... pril-2010/
March: http://onethirtybpm.com/2010/03/22/the- ... arch-2010/
February: http://onethirtybpm.com/2010/02/23/the- ... uary-2010/
January: http://onethirtybpm.com/2010/01/27/the- ... uary-2010/

I also separately did an interview with both members of Vex'd who provided me with a great piece: http://onethirtybpm.com/2010/03/30/interview-vexd/

We've got plenty of good stuff coming as well, including some nice interviews and promising mixes.

Before anyone starts complaining, my idea of 'dubstep' is as confused and fragmented as anyone else's should be in 2010, and you're not going to find reviews of the latest Funtcase or Flux Pavilion or Caspa or etc. there, and many will probably disagree about the inclusion of certain producers and releases. But you can't please everyone! Let me know your thoughts, good and bad, always looking for ways to improve. If anyone wishes to get into contact with me for any reason, my email address is plastered all over the column, you should be able to find it quite easily. If for some reason you can't, you can just message me on here.

p.s. the site's name is coincidental and does not really have anything to do with the music covered. I was originally going to be cheeky and call the column onefortybpm, but alas...

Guido feature+interview online: http://onethirtybpm.com/2010/05/21/interview-guido/

Cheers Kuma. ;)

May column ETA May 31. Lots of good stuff, under-the-radar releases alongside the obvious heavy-hitters.

Hey man, just read the reviews and I think they're really dope. My one qualm about it is that occasionally the content treads a little too closely to Boomkat's recommendations (in all fairness, I've been accused of the same when I write about bass music). Not that I think the list needs more Caspa, but I was hoping to read about more personal favs/stuff that hadn't been recommended by others yet.

On the whole though, good writing and good tunes so it's all nitpicking.

Yeah I get what you're saying man, and I could see that. Fact is I get most of the stuff before it hits Boomkat, so it's mostly just coincidence. I'm not going to lie and pretend that I don't check out stuff rec'd by Boomkat, but usually I do manage to beat them to the punch. But when you've got a feature that goes up at the end of every month, it's bound to include stuff from earlier that month that has already been verbally rinsed by the big boys, you know what I mean? Especially if you're going over the columns weeks or months after they first go up, it kind of amplifies that effect. I'm glad you like it though, thanks for the words.

This month actually has a bunch of stuff that hasn't been talked about a lot quite yet, some overlooked releases and some newer names. Including stuff that was released and escaped Boomkat's recommended status ;)

Safe,

It's hard to argue since they tend to get most progressive releases right, so for reviewing purposes there's often a lot of overlap one way or the other. Less forgiving at nights though, I always find it funny though if I go out to a set and the selection seems cribbed from their recommendation section. Never happens with experienced DJs mind, but I've seen more than a few young cats come on and basically mix their "just released" section which sort of has me laughing since mixing is at least 75% selection if you ask me.

In any case, looking forward to the next one'.

The column for May is up...

http://onethirtybpm.com/2010/05/31/the- ... -may-2010/

Interview with West Norwood Cassette Library and a mix from Milyoo, as well as reviews of new 7even, Numbers, Hotflush (Sepalcure, Scuba), DJ Madd, James Blake, massive Palms Out release w/ Bok Bok, Girl Unit, Kingdom, etc. etc (and tons more reviews). Lots of good stuff, had to overlook a few things for space considerations but let's say honourable mentions to Glut/Tempest, Fram/Iddy, Phaze One and the new Planas on Immerse.

Keep an eye out, big things coming in the next months in terms of mixes and features.
