What synth VST do you use?

Post by hayze99 » Fri Apr 30, 2010 1:48 am

Yes, I know it's been asked a dozen times, but never hurts to refresh the discussion.

I used to use Albino before I started with Reason. Now I'm back into VSTs and I was trying out Massive, but tbh, I just think it was completely bloated, with a ridiculous amount of unnecessary features. I like my synths nice and simple. Looking at Zebra right now.

Fm8, Absynth + Arturia Prophet. If u don't like Massive then mayb you'll feel the same about the other NI products .... but I am really likin Fm8. Z.

Hmmm. I'm not sure. I really like the feel and look of them, I just didn't get a good vibe off Massive. I could be wrong, but a lot of the stuff on their just seems so unnecessary. I'm used to Malstrom on Reason; maybe there's some VSTs that resemble it (but pack a bit more a punch, Malstrom was a tad too limited).

Probably are a lot of unnecessary features in there that I definately don't use lol. I use Massive mostly just for sub sounds - which are pretty easy to build from scratch. Fm8 has a lot of decent presets to tinker with which I'm digging at the mo. My mate reckons Prophet is a good "meat and potatoes synth" ... I'm still getting the hang of them.

Analog, Operator and tal elektro2.

I also use my mates arturia classic collection a lot.

I'm seriously after something new though, analog is pretty limited and I'm not really into operator.

I generally use ES2 cos I can get most sounds I want from it. Sometimes I use my 8 sawtooth oscillator pD patch, audacity's generate tone function and sometimes lotsa test oscillators. Or Olga, that synth is sick and I'm definitely paying for the license when I can afford it.

I find myself using these in most of my songs:

FM8
Massive
LinPlug FreeAlpha
Operator

I am really interested in Circle, I think I am going to download the demo and investigate further.

Also, been using Albino when working on songs with a friend, good sounds/interface.

Absynth, Massive, FM8, Alchemy & Reaktor...if you found massive too much then I'd imagine you'll absolutely hate all the others I've mentioned.

Massive is about the simplest "power synth" out there, if you're looking for something nice and simple try something like the free Tal Elektro VST which is a nice simplistic virtual analogue type synth, it's great and probably exactly what you need but once you decide to get into the deep & more advanced synths Massive is about as straight forward as it gets.

Hmmm. I donno man, it might of just been because I was only fucking around with it for a couple of minutes, but I just felt the whole process with Massive to be backwards. Although I did see that you can really rip the shit out of it. Lots of versatility.

The elektro synth is a bit simple. I'm looking for something with the interface like that but with quite a bit more waves and lfo options. Maybe I'm just being picky. I'm going to boot up Massive again, and try out Zebra, since I heard it was pretty good.

I'd say sytrus but that has more controls than a russian space station so I'll go with blue for nice interface and apparanetly sylenth1 is pretty good for a simple synth, never tried it myself
