How to: That build up noise, before the drop.

Iv been trying to find a thread to help me, but I dont even know what to call it. Sometimes in trance it sounds like a building wing, getting louder. But dubstep has a huge variety of "build up" noises that I hear. How do you do this? I have FL studio, with this wind preset, is it just that with a mixer on it?

Any audio examples would be helpful if you want people to tell you how to do specific sounds.

Many of those build ups are just filtered noise though, stick a LP or BP on your wind preset and tweak the cutoff, see if it gets you there.

the way i would do this in fl studio is;
1 open 3osc
2 use two saws (detune if you like) and one noise osc
3 then send it to a lp filter with a little res
4 then the most important bit automate the volume, pitch and the filter cutoff so they rise up
5 ?
6 profit

if your still confussed post up any question and i will try and help.

Massive saw risers like 3za sid, or just run a notch filter accross the speactrum of some white noise, start from lows and sweep your way to the top...

Sample a fire whistle...

Reverse a horn or nice long crash cymbal or something as said abopve...

Get created thier f*ckin risers man... go nuts.

Very subtle volume change on the last bar of your drop followed by a crash, along with a rising Fx and a vocal sample to boot.

Sweet, this produced a nice build. Thank you!

I don't like using risers, there a bit over done. I prefer to create reverse reverb which works great for a buildup

Lots of people do it differently.

I tend to take some white noise and band pass filter it then move the position of the band pass filter up in time to the track. With loads of reverb.
Plus I tend to layer a really airy pad under that and use a low pass filter and move the low pass filter up in much the same way.

I also like to reverse a cymbal, nice and simple.
Or Add a ton of reverb to a snare and reverse that.

There are lots of good suggestions in this thread. The build up sound was something I struggled with for a while too :)

There are lots of fun things you can do if you're using side chain compression as well before a drop. Like slowly letting more and more of the sound out until eventually it's not compressed at all right before a drop.

love the reverse cymbal. creates tension without being too in your face like the classic kick buildup.

another way to get a cool similar sound is this:

1) open albino, and leave it on the pad/atmosphere preset that it opens with by default.

2) turn off the oscillator other than the white noise, i forget which one it is.

3) add the "fruity phaser" and put it on the "stereo enhance 1" preset.

4) set the cutoff on albino all the way down

5) put 1 sustained note into the piano roll, usually 32 steps long will work perfect for a 30 sec build.

6) automate the cutoff on albino to open more the closer you get to the drop.

hella sweep, the preset has tons of attack already, which is important for adding intensity.

fuck with adding more chorus and and flang and shit to it to give it a more atmospheric sound. play with having the effects on fully at the start of the sound and automating them out slowly as you raise the cutoff. kinda makes it come from out of no where to all up in yo face all of the sudden. :)

*EDIT* almost fergot - ur gunna wanna turn the res on that cutoff filter all the way down too or you'll get a bit of an annoying whistle sound

also sidechaining the volume of the sweep to your kick drum if your doing a "kick-build" will give you a cool sound too
