What's this mad effect?

It's probably some mad custom MAX patch, but how have the vocals been treated on this tune?

Right at the start, and pretty much throughout. It's looping back on itself in a really weird way, with some mad pitch bending and some kind of bit reduction...

Sounds awesome.

sounds like they've been sliced up a lot, some of them have been reversed. If I were to guess. It could be something else though. But that's what it sounds like to me.

probably a good guess as johnny greenwood does do lots of crazy max stuff. could maybe emulate it by manually chopping up the vocals and adding phasing n flanging effects possibly...

Sounds like some sort of granular based processing, possibly.

that's a fun tune to remix... did it years ago, should try it again with some dubstep flavor.

i think johnny greenwood uses a kaoss pad to do it live, might be the same on the recording

Definately just a Kaos pad, sounds sick though!

You could get there by chopping up vocals into a sampler with portamento, messing about to get the glide sounds, then resampling and chopping again. As others have said, knowing Johnny, it's probably a MAX patch that scrubs through audio and does random pitch shifting and effects.

that entire album is mad. i've been listening to it for like 7 years now and can't figure out how they do any of that shit.

my advice is to eat a bunch of acid and hole up w/ a sampler, you'll probably get something that sounds pretty similar if that's your goal

sounds like speed ramps before or after the cuts, vaguely like turntable or tape starts/stops + filtering and other tom fuckery.
