Hey guys (drummer here??)

I'm a drummer and im looking into working on solo stuff, like substituting my own sounds/beats (From my acoustic drums) think Travis Barker Remixes/DJam Travis Collaboration..

But I want a little more options than JUST my drums. I have electronic drums as well so I'm sure that helps because I don't have mics/mixer for my acoustic set. I'm looking for a (not TOO complex way..) to be able to get my drum tracks and substitute them into other MP3's work with the sound, EQ, levels, ETC, and maybe even put in my own sounds if that's possible.

I'm willing to drop money but prefer to work with free programs if they're good. Basically im looking for some program recommendations that I could take a look at and work with, even just to make beats that I can clean up/do effects on/etc.

My buddy who's into dub-step said to check out Rusko but I couldn't find what program he uses, or really where to start. Any help would be awesome dudes! Dub-step on!

i think your best off getting a daw first. im not going to tell you which, just demo them all and pick the one that you like the most. if your coming from a drumming back ground might be worth looking at a pad controler i.e. akai mpd. also a drum sampler like ni battery might be worth a look. then you can worry about all the other stuff that is new to you later ie synths chords ect.

Good to see another drummer getting into production!

I just recently got a minimal kit (kick snare and hats) set up with a dynamic mic on the batter head of the kick and a condenser for the snare/hat. Works like a charm. Making beats to stuff is so easy now... just need the time to work on it more.

I can't point you in a direction for a program for your electric kit but I will say that I hate using pads (so unnatural feeling). And check out the free portable studio http://www.dubstepforum.com/free-portab ... 73393.html

if you have an electric kit then no doubt it has a midi out, so fuck a daw, just get your self something like kontakt or battery (which run stand alone too, well kontakt at least, i assume battery does too). that way you can map samples to keys and velocities, which your drumkit should be able to trigger.

As Gravity said, you can trigger any drum sampler through midi. NI's Battery is good as well as Toontrack's Superior Drummer which has several superbly sampled kits at different velocity levels. Unfortunately neither are free unless you pirate them. I'm sure there's some quality freeware samplers out there but none that I can recommend out of experience.

As for DAWs, I can't recommend Reaper highly enough. They have an uncrippled full featured demo available (http://reaper.fm/) and if you decide you like it and want to purchase a proper license, it's only $60. Despite the low price, it's got everything you could want and more, including free bundled plugins and utilities (for example a tool to convert audio into midi for triggering samples, which you might find useful)
It's also really customizable and skinnable so you can modify the shortcuts and macros etc.
I don't wanna suck Reaper's balls too much (partly because every time it's brought up I ramble on and on about how awesome it is and end up running out of breath ) but give the demo a try and watch some tutorial videos on youtube to get started.

Excellent, I think I want to go the MIDI route, so I don't have to worry about perfecting the electronic kit sound for each song and eq'ing up the wazoo, etc etc etc...

So I downloaded reaper (thanks for the link), I just need to get Toontrack's Superior drummer. I got the program i think, if its even a program, but I think i need some help. If someone could help me with a step-by-step that'd be awesome... my email's wiouxev@gmail.com and my aim is Lougey Moto if anyone is on that wouldn't mind holding my hand for a minute to get Toontrack's working.... (wink..)

Looks like Im missing the sound library for Superior Drummer, I might need some help. Is the original program an application? Like im supposed to launch it? Or do I just import sounds in Reaper?

My assumption is I need to figure out how to set my Electric drums input to be MIDI. Then I will have a "MIDI TRACK" then thats where the drum tracks from Superior Drummer (or similar program) comes in. Correct? Im pretty sure I know A, B, and C, I just need to learn and work how to get in between them.

In Reaper Superior Drummer should be a vst insert on your track (aka you installed the vst into your "C:\Program Files (x86)\vst plugins" folder. Minus the x86 if you're not on Win7. Should be default anyway) To add the plugin to reaper, double click to the left of the track view to create a new track, click Fx button, then hit F5 or Fx > Scan for new plugins. Should show up in your Fx list under instruments. Click the In button on your track and choose Midi Inputs and the channel your E Drums are coming in on (or all channels to make it easier)
You'll probably have to hit the monitor button right beside the In button to be able to pass the midi through to the plugin but I'm not sure. You should be getting some sounds out of SD when you play your kit. Also you should see the red midi trigger light up beside the track meter when you play.
Then either edit the midi settings on your kit or the drum assignments in Superior Drummer to get everything to match up right (ie your kick's not triggering some cigarette splash cymbal)

Thomas Haake is THE Superior Drummer. He can play better straight 1/128 kick notes than a plugin set to a grid. Even computers aren't that precise...
