I am writing a project about dubstep and electric genre's and their roots. Does anyone have anything that can help me. My actual title for my project is, Has Electronics had a big effect on the music scene. Does anyone know any other genre's that have been effected, or where dubstep has come from. I want to concentrate on the links that dubstep has, including the link to actual instruments in dubstep, for example V by Distance. I have some knowledge of dubstep from my initial research already, for example the characteristics of dubstep and its divergence from garage/dub/reggae/2 step/basically everything. Any help would be great. Share you knowledge!!!!

the slow transition of analogue versus digital (and the resistence of analogue (vinyl) formats against this evolution)

Before 1998 - UK Garage was 4x4, basically soulful house but with "UK beat" (faster than US garage)
1998 - birth of 2Step, massive UK garage blowup peaking with Craig David and Artful Dodger hits around the world in 1999
2000 - 2 step dies, diverted sounds and DJs playing b-sides, dub remixes and "darker" (zed bias and the lot)
2001-2004 the grime years, never really reaching anywhere outside the UK except from wiley and dizzee
2004 - 2010 grime b-sides and darker, deeper remixes blowing up - got called dubstep, basically it's just garage b-sides sound again, just labeled as own genre.

dub is over 70 years old, it's a mindstate, a production technique, a culture. dubstep is just its latest incarnation, it's a sound that has migrated between Reggae > House > Techno > Drum & Bass (because jungle was never dub! jungle was rave) > Breaks (with TAYO in the lead!) and now lately > Garage.

Check this corny, but still funny GUIDE TO ELECTRONIC MUSIC out :D

http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/
(It is a funny interactive online application that allows you to click on various genres and listen to them.. it is hard to sound original under this light :p)

NOTE::: he has not updated it with DUBSTEP, it should obviously follow after "2Step garage" under the HOUSE section.

And also I thought it was people like Benga, Skream, Hatcha, Youngsta who invented dubstep, or had a big part in inventing it?

There's some history/info here under the "archive" section: http://www.garagepressure.com/ - This mostly relates to the early UK (garage/breakstep/breaks) influence on the Australian scene.
