so who's writing house?
or funky.
some really interesting things going on in the arrangements of house tracks these days, everything from Todd Edwards to MJ Cole to Moska and on down. Besides the classic NYC house nights, Contakt runs a (wicked) night here in NYC, and I know nuff people who are finding their space between ye olde dubstep and house bits.
There's a few discussions on the house board here-- just curious who, in DSF production-land, is touching the 120-130 territory.

Re: so who's writing house?
I come from house and techno, so yeah, me I guess, although more techno than house. Some stuff further down on my Soundcloud if anyone's interested.
I'm generally a bit more into the older, somewhat rawer sounding stuff (and of the new stuff I tend to gravitate towards the darker and less melodic bits) but I do like some of the stuff I'm hearing at the moment from the uk funky scene. Thing is, a lot of stuff gets lumped in under "house" that I wouldn't really call house, in the same way that a lot of stuff gets lumped into dubstep that I wouldn't really call dubstep. (IMHO at least dubstep was -- at one point in the recent past -- embryonic and unformed enough to encompass "anything bass heavy and sorta halftime at around 140bpm", whereas house has a more defined history and sound and I tend not to like just categorizing as house "anything around 120-130bpm with a 4/4 kick".)

Dave-Sharm: I love 120-130. I have written a fair amount in that tempo... They don't show up in many of my releases, but they do in my live sets. Next time you're on AIM, hit me up and I'll send you some of em.

I make a bit of Funky and Garage, been pretty away from it lately though because I've been working on my EP. But it's done now so people should expect more Funky/Garage from me

Never properly delved into house. I do like a lot of the deep house stuff I'm hearing atm like Floating Points. I've been doing a lot of 4x4 stuff in my current tunes, last tune I did was at 132bpm (in my sig)... kinda like just taking bits out of different genres and blurring the borders when I sit down and make tune rather than thinking "Right, let's get on a dubstep tune blad". Might investigate some deeper house though, some interesting sounds about.

Re: so who's writing house?
yes, although it doesn't fall into the 120 - 130 territory... 110-120 would be more like it!
dashed off a couple of tunes last year, landed an official UR remix as a result

Just checked my watch and will you look at that, it's 3:20...j-one wrote:last tune I did was at 132bpm (in my sig)...

Re: so who's writing house?
I find that even when I try to make some fairly hard dubstep, I end up in house/garage/funky territory. Not a bad thing I guess, so I have resigned to my fate

Yeah, this...I do a lot of tunes around 130, a lot of tunes with 4/4, and there's definitely a house influence in there...I still call it dubstep, but it's definitely somewhere in between...but that's why I love this scene/tempo/genre...
