For those who don't know about it, freesound project is a cool website where users can upload original samples for download by other users on the site. There is lots of useless sounds on the site but it could be very cool.

I just joined and have uploaded possibly the first "dubstep" tagged sample on the site. It's an attempt at a knockbass sound I made using my Bass guitar, EnergyXT and my effects. I put some degrade/bit reduction on it to make it sound a bit more old school. It sounds cool played melodically with some chorus and delay. It is being evaluated by the websites moderators at the moment so it may not be shown for a day or two.

If there are any other novice sound designers out there that would like to contribute samples to the site for the collective use of everyone, go to http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/index.php and get into it.

I will be contributing to it when I can under the name stepsound.

Make more dubstep samples, hits, loops, flavours, vox, stabs, subs, pads, wobbles, fx.

yeah but it's "creative commons" mate... meaning (correct me if i'm wrong) that you can use ANY of these samples. you can tweak them, cut'em up use them for your song and all that but you can't release the song using those samples if you want to profit from it.

lotta big name producers are profiting off samples that im sure are uncleared... burial comes to mind.

I read the license agreement on the website just then.
to paraphrase:
1. Samples must be either originally synthesised, or completely mashed and resampled versions of other things completely twisted into something new.

2. Samples of factory presets are not allowed unless they have been butchered into something completely new.

3. You can use the samples for free in your tracks and original compositions. You can even re-edit and process them to make your own original derivative.

4.you cannot use the samples for advertising purposes, this is the only definate no. BUT you can get around this hurdle by asking the original author for permission. And if you have twisted it and resampled it into an original derivative you are free to use it anyway.

5. Any direct use of the samples in must be attributed to the original creator. And by the very nature of the site and its community I'd say clearances for use would be very obtainable. Attributing to authors is made very easy by a log of your downloads and an attributing tool.

So basically. No ads, ask permission if you use it raw, and you can use the samples for commercial release as long as you attribute the sample to its originator or effect/alter it and resample it

There are Juno Hoovers and Amen Breaks on there, raw and uncut which is in violation of CC anyway.

Which would lead me to think that punishment for CC violation is a slap on the hand with a wet bus ticket if you break the rules (If anyone noticed anyway).

what i love about freesound aint the standard shit, its the weird stuff to use for atmospherics, ppl who've recorded birds and rain and shit like that, excellent for buildin a vibe in tracks

yeh. i've been browsing that site for a while now. Interface is a bit awkward at times and downloadtimes are especially rude.
Another peeve is the often BAD quality of samples, which makes them completely useless in your own tunes.
