i usually just use a simple sine with with no fx, phasing etc etc, any tips on giving my sub a bit more character?

Just start with your basic sine. Work out your track first. Figure out where the kick and snare are sitting. Then figure out what kinda harmonic content you wanna add to your sub.

When learning about your sub, a frequency analyzer may be helpful. Just switch your sine to a square and see where the harmonics go. You may find a nice little spot for your kick.

Do a little research into additive synthesis. You will start to see how all of the basic waveforms you know (square, triangle, saw) are made up of sine waves. This knowledge can help you to understand where you may want to put the harmonics of your sub. Do a search for "video" in the title, in the production forum, go back maybe 3, 4 weeks at the most. Someone posted up some really helpful videos on additive, which explained these basic waveform concepts very nicely/visually.

This is all assuming you don't want to just use your ears.

Give this a read. Not so much about distorting it but talks about envelopes which is another of making the sound more interesting.
