Nice Breaks

Post by Steve_French » Wed Jun 16, 2010 2:22 pm

hey guys, recently had a thought whilst listening to 'My world' by Noisia, and i really got inspired by the drums. i know that noisia use a lot of breaks in their in their tracks and would like to know if you guys know of any good sources for breaks. i'm not on about old clichéd breaks either like the amen break etc. if you know noisia, then you'll know the type of stuff i mean.
thanks:D

artist sample packs?

breaks are generally sampled from proper records - the closest to a sample pack i can recommend is 101s break pack, god knows if its still going about, but if you can find it it has literally hundreds of wicked old funk breaks.

plus youd be surpised what you can do with your 'cliched old breaks' with a bit of work.

i do a lot of my break processing in kontakt - generally i will slice it up in soundforge, then load the bits into kontakt and group the various elements into their own groups (kicks, snares, hihats, ghosts, etc) and then process each group seperately (e.g. remove low rumble out of hihats, filter resonance round the sweet spot on the kick, etc.). then you have various options for envelopes, saturation, distortion, weird fx, pitching stuff, etc.

then post sampler you can do various stuff like distortion, compression, paralell compression, whatever really. as with anythihng... just bugger about i guess!

never really thought of processing each individual hit, just seems pretty time consuming though

http://www.mhat.com/phatdrumloops/

That is the best website for breaks. Ever.

Personally I use to have a hardcore hip hop mentally of only using breaks I found off vinyl but now I got less time on my hands I tend to use a mixture.

Have fun :)

FYI - If memory serves, Noisia posts & interviews in the Grid production forum on DOA indicated that, in addition to one hits, THEY DO IN FACT USE THE CLASSIC BREAKS (Amen, Skull Snaps, Funky Mule, Worm, etc.) to construct their beats. So if you're thinking that they are sourcing different breaks than the classics to get their drum sound, you may be mistaken...

They have indicated often in their Grid posts that it is their layering & processing methods that are responsible for their sound. Their sample selection is not as unique as you might think...

Read their DOA Q&A session from 2005 for reference:

Hope this helps...

You don't even have to go to old funk records, it's amazing how many decent breaks you can find just browsing through your iTunes. I use Slicex (FL) for most of my breaks and I always add some percussion in too to make it noticeably different from the original break then I usually add an extra hi hat pattern or 2 and layer up everything like a bitch
How does I wobbled bass?

I have a hunch their (and Spors) breaks are the result of tight transient shaping, probably SPLs. That kind of punchy tightness is unnatural.

Look into this:

Why is Avril Lavigne on your iTunes? On purpose?

Only read OP but could I maybe recommend you record some breaks? You'll have absolute full control over the sound and have stems for each part of the kick... Surely you know a drummer, right?
