My question is:

Do I really need headphones if I am not limited by my noise output (live in a house, no neighbors) ...In other words: can I mixdown well enough with just my monitors, and would headphones improve mixing and/or mastering?

(I've got a pair of RP6 monitors)

Indeed you can renegadex, I'm sure you will survive.

Seriously though, just get to know those monitors well. Listen to a lot of music that you know well on them to train your ears to their frequency response and to your room's.

Headphones give you a constant environment no matter what. But I use monitors only... Once you get used to them you know more or less what''s going on. I think it's always good to test out a mix down on a few different mediums.

I love saying this, but Breakage used to use (and might still use) PC speakers to produce is tracks. So in the end it's the artist not the equipment.

I think joy orbinson said in an interview that he produced or was producing on pc speakers

Nah see one I read said he uses old 80s hifi he bought when he was young...

Yeah it was a hifi setup, I believe his dad's old one. He had posted a couple of pics on DOA/thegrid a few years back, and it was a bare budget setup. I'm sure that's changed by now, especially signed with digital soundboy etc. There's some vids of him working in a pretty massive studio around.

But of course you can not only survive with just monitors, you can go all the way if you got it in you.
