Working off a crappy laptop and some cheap ass PC Line speaker. Doesn't seem to be holding me back too much. Never really experienced gear lust.

To be honest... You don't really need all those fancy hardware controllers or analogue hardware. It's rather funny that you mention your shitty headphones and cheap speakers since in my opinion sound playback is the only really important aspect of production hardware.

Playback quality depends on several factors, the main one being your ears, which if damaged, can't be helped. Monitors however are relatively cheap and will help you so much in your productions.

Imo monitors are pretty necessary, all the midi equipment isn't but makes things alot easier and more interactive, which is more fun for me.

do what you think is best. my monitors+sub are probably the one thing in this room i regret buying the least, not just for writing but for general listening fun times too

i'll concede that i have a lot of midi controllers just sitting in a box though and do everything through my laptop's keyboard and trackpad

Studio essentials (according to me, anyway)

legit DAW
Studio Monitors
a good synth (either VST or Hardware)
a good drum library

you don't "need" it all...

but for me... it feels nice to have a decent setup after dealing with substandard BS for about 15 years

too many VST's or extra gear can hinder your progress

For my way of working, yeah I agree. I've been very conscious of what I have lately and not really spending on stuff I don't need.

1. daw
2. midi keyboard
3. interface
4. monitors

vst's are like a addiction.

Reason 4
So no need for extra's such as ...

a good synth (either VST or Hardware)
a good drum library

Although, there are other DAW's out there too, unfortunately

you don't "need" it all...

but for me... it feels nice to have a decent setup after dealing with substandard BS for about 15 years
