Hey,
dont hate on a posting dude. If u dont use Cubase .. and dont have an opinion on the essential edition... just press the Back button and go find some other threads
ive just bought a mac and i need to invest in a daw. on pc i used to use cubase sx, reason and fl studio (switchin from time to time)... all cracked.. yes... (+ pro tools, bought, but i didnt like it)
now im a grown up i want to invest in a daw, a legal daw. Is cubase essential shit? cuz commercial-daw-wise, its price sounds like its shit... should i invest in the bigger versions?
i know theres a comparison chart on the steinberg website but i want to have musician's opinion

More producers here than musicians, though there are plenty of them too. If you are going the cubase route, and you're ready to be a grown up, get the full version.

Cubase Essential is more than a capable DAW if you are on a budget it has as many features as the older full Cubase versions which has and still does produce historic music.

If your on a Mac use logic!
Logic express is like £69 brand new and you can pick the full version for about £200 on ebay!

If I was on a mac, I'd go with logic, unless I was really really familiar with the cube.

yall forcin me to go read those ''is logic better then cubase threads''
fack yall.
No but seriously, Nowaysj, id be interested in hearing more from what you mean. At first sight, i was repelled by the cheap prince, but reading about it, i kinda felt like the costly versions were simply more about the included VSTS and the live instrument takes capabilites of the thing.
since I have a broken mpc 3k to repair, i reconsidered my ambitions of buying a studio version of Cubase when i saw they had a starter version. I still wanna make sure i dont do the thing all noobs do (ive been scratchin and mixin for a long time and you always start buying cheap dj in a box shit that u end up throwing to the dogs or selling to other startin djs)
any other major difference between the full and the essential version you have in mind, that could make me get your point?
it would help
and thx yall for the replies.

I don't know the major differences between essential and the full. I am sure there is a comparison chart on their website, I've looked at it before. But I do know this, they will do something to hobble essential so that it is painful to produce a full track in there. Granted, you could skip all of steinies fx and instruments as they are NOT essential, but I am concerned about what functionalities essentials lacks.
In this regard, I would just buy the full deal, because you will be getting the full complete package, with no intentionally drilled holes in the software.

if you're looking at cubase essential then take a look at Cockos Reaper. Heard of a few long time cubase users making the switch. I went from Cubase LE4 to 5 because it was just frustrating to use (though im guessing essential is a bit better). If i'd known about reaper i think i would have gone that route instead.

Full license is $60!!!

agree with that. If your concern is full functionality and economy, reaper is the shiznit.

get the full fledged version of 5
i use sx3 more just due to ram and cpu bs, but once you get in deeo with bussing, layering etc you're gonna want to have the full fledged version so that the cheaper version limitations don't hinder you

Your gonn ahte me now... but i was using the latest updated Cubase 5 on my friends new mac and it started to struggle with a few things and crashed our projects a few times. I dont think steinberg love macs too much
Your not going to want to hear this, but... Logic pro is really highly optimized to work in the 64 bit architecture of snow leopard and its hardware. Its solid as a rock (for me) and get a few teething problems along the way, granted.. But dont let that put you off.
Give it a go?

Dunno... most of the things missing in studio youll never miss - control room, surround sound, mp3 export (

- a pro feature!!!).
I had a good look at this and the one feature Id miss is offline process history - if you dont know what that is then get studio. I use this all the time tho.
You can always upgrade to the full version later. Its cheaper to upgrade from Studio 5 - Full 6 than Buy 5 then upgrade to 6. So you could in theory get Cubase 6 cheaper if you feel you need the additional features which im guessing you dont.
The plugins are by and large shit and i never use any, you can get better freeware for everything in an hour of KVR. Reverance (convolution verb) is nice but SIR1 and others do this for free.
Edit - yeah cubase isnt meant to be as well optimised etc on macs for some reason...

Cubase LE4 was limited to something like 6 or 8 Instrument channels (VSTs), you can't use traditional midi channnels, you can't save presets and obviously it doesn't come with a lot of the plugins that the full version does.. Pain in the arse!
I also went from a cracked copy of SX3 to this and yeah it was a big step down. Very happily using C5 now.

Thx a lot everyone,
up so far im leaning towards a studio version of cubase 5... since i dont have the budget forthe full fledged version. i hope ill still beable todo complex mixer routings with it, as it is a very important part of my sound.
yet, uve got my interest on logics side of the spectrum.. ill read more about it thru the weekend and ill declare my decision publicly. to be honest. i love cubase... but if u tell me it fucks macs up...

Yo for some reason dsf isnt letting me reply to your pm. so here goes.
In my opinion, from using protools, cubase, reason and logic.. I have stuck with logic. Its basically the mac equivalent to cubase is is insanely easy to get complex routings. Its got fully comprehensive routing/aux options for multiple outputs from synths, SC busses all that jazz. I know cubase does this too, but from my understanding its been a pain up until the lastest incarnation of cubase 5.
The built in synths and plugins for logic are worth the price alone. they really are just fucking great. For example, I made this track will all logic stock plugs, not a single 3rd party.
Soundcloud
Its all about the little touches like having a spectral analyser built into the EQ so you dont have to funk about with a free one later down the line.
Synths like the ES2 and sculpture are very phat and you can get some insane FM modulation on your basses.
These are just my opinions, at the end of the day all that matters is what you feel comfortable using when making music.

(ps: i dont think cubase would harm your mac, its just not as stable as logic which is built for the operating system n hardware etc...)
