Original Dub technician Scientist touches down in Portland to mix Lo Dubs into outer space!
Back when most of us were knee high to a grasshopper, Hopeton Brown was busy cutting the ruffest dubs in yard and defining Dub Music as it is known today.
He began his career as an apprentice to King Tubby whom, as legend has it, gave him the name Scientist.
Known for shearing classic Reggae tunes down the essential bass and drum patterns inside and emphasising the cavernous space within the tunes and brining out the ghosts inside.
His discography is immense and he has engineered sessions for every one of note in this reggae business.
Scientist made a name for himself producing classic genre defining albums such as "Scientist Vs. Prince Jammy", "Scientist Wins The World Cup" and the immortal "Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires", he now turns his gaze on the catalog of Portland's own Lo Dubs Records for something we call "Scientist mixes Lo Dubs Into Outer Space".
This session and the forthcoming / resulting opus on Lo Dubs showcases the hidden 3D elements of proper Dub in Dubstep music as well as highlight the thread that runs through them, naturally.

Here is a synopsis I wrote as a press release a while back....
...Basically, about a month and a half ago someone with a myspace page listed as "Scientist" wrote me a message saying he had been checking out our stuff stuff on the LoDubs myspace page, and liked what he was hearing, and would like to work on it a bit, in order to bring out its "Hidden third dimension". I did a bit of research, and discovered this was indeed the elusive Scientist. He was a contemporary of King Tubby, who along with Augustus Pablo invented the genre of Dub music by utilizing a mixing board as an instrument to manipulate the tracks in a song and effects in order to create new, largely instrumental variants of songs, or "Dubs".
We had an idea of doing an album all of LoDubs material, dubbed out by Scientist, called "LoDubs meets the Scientist in Outer Space". We came to the conclusion that it would be ideal to do this as a live event first, and thus embarked on making this one of the Version happenings. One challenge that arose was that in order for the Scientist to have the flexibility to utilize the individual elements of the songs in the LoDubs catalog, it would be necessary to go though the catalog and remix a great deal of it. That is when we decided to make this a three way collaboration with Alter Echo, who is doing this, and at the same time providing his creative treatment of the LoDubs source material, which him and the Scientist will then perform together.
Alter Echo is a well respected producer, as much on the Dub side of the spectrum as Hip hop and electronic music in general. He did several highly touted and collectible releases on the BSI label (still among the highest respected dub labels to emerge from America) before continuing on to collaborations with DJ Spooky, Lifesavas, Dr. Israel, libretto, and countless others. with many of these, he has taken on the modern day role of Scientist, as a hybrid of engineer and producer.
The main things that are key in a description though are that LoDubs, as a proponent of what Dub music at present has become, is for one of the first times being reinterpreted in a live setting by one of the key individuals who invented the genre, and his modern day counterpart.
It truly is a very rare occurrence, to say the least.
