Just curious about how others work

With drums, I know alot of folk tend to layer and re-sample etc to get their beats punchy and tight. Do you lot tend to build kits of drums you have 'created' and use them frequently or basically use new drum creations each time?

The obvious point is that not every drum you make is going to work with every track, but in the way a band might use just one drum kit for an entire album, how do most producers work? Would building a (few) custom kits enhance the workflow and give you a 'sound' so to speak of?

I have always created new drums for each track, but sometimes feel like I'm re-inventing the wheel...

i tend to think it would be good to have a couple of made kits i mean u def hear people re using drum hits or certain snares

A bit of both. prime example of recycling beats are groups such as Bar nine and peeps like Datsik. Nothing wrong with it in my eyes.

For myself each tune is like a puzzle and I enjoy finding the right pieces that fit so I just tend to start from scratch every time..

I think I'm going to harvest the beats from previous tracks and get some Danger Co. drum racks (ableton) going.
Drums always tend to get a bit of treatment so I'd say the chances of things sounding the same is minimal.

having a similar drum kit would also lend to ur personal style along with the way it is arranged

tend to always use new racks although for a good while i did massively overuse one particular snare sample, but well when something is so fat.....

If I could get by with just one sound for drums, I'd still be in a band. I start fresh each time.

I take drums out of breaks or wherever and make a velocity mapped multisample preset for each one. When it comes time to make beats, I just go through them all and mix+match.

Me as well but that doesn't mean I won't reach for something I have used before.

yeah im in a similar boat. I save all by battery kits and some drum loops like shaker patterns i like and re-use them when i feel they fit.

no doubt. get a drum kit if you want your drums to sound the same every time. the beauty of edm is the freedom you have with your drums.

new drums, every time! not that you can't resuse samples, but don't use the same "kit" again and again. we're not making psytrance here.

I have many drumkits at my disposal that I use all of the time, culled from years of building kits. Yet I still make new kits quite often. A lot of my stuff is playing different kits off of different percussion and chopped breaks.

One thing I never do is sample a whole rhythm and recycle it. Rhythms are made from scratch everytime, playing them live and then tweaking them in the sequencer.

Both. Saving your preferred drums/synths etc and using them in a new tune is a good way to get the ball rolling. You can spend more time actually making the tune rather than building elements for 6 hours. You can always replace the drums or tweak your synths later if you want. It's also a good idea to start completely from scratch sometimes.

Suppose when youv'e got phat drums, youv'e got phat drums! Maybe get a kit just right and use as a template. Of course if you get the bug start fresh eh?
