How beneficial is technology?

Post by nicenice » Sun Jul 11, 2010 12:18 am

We've all seen the joys, marvels and failures of technology. Medicine, sending people into space, television, the internet etc. But technology and is advancement can be seen as a bad thing, especially how a lot of people are living in an almost virtual world. Where everything revolves around facebook or their blackberries. I don't know where it'll take us, it could be somewhere good it could be bad. I'm sitting on the fence. What does everyone else think?

Mint way to piss of a girl and earn yourself a mint night of blue balls is to compare their orgasm to the scene in terminator where Miles Dyson starts to perish

Eventually, the advantages are offset by the disadvantages, and we don't really go anywhere; just distracted a little more efficiently.

While technology makes things easier, people are still working their faces off to afford high-tech bullshit novelty crap. Besides health n stuff, it's kind of hard to justify all of it.

Have you ever compared a quivering girl at that vital moment to the Miles Dyson scene though? Right at the peak of miss vinegar face? It's a curse that sometimes makes me laugh at a bad time

One of the advantages of tech is information. If the tech were not available we would not have this place to congregate in and share our thoughts.

Yeah people slave away to buy shit they don't need and will just upgrade to the next version they see on a tv ad in a couple of months. Technology is both good and bad. It's helping keep a lot of people stupid these days, which I think is one of the goals. Corporations want consumers who don't ask questions, just buy buy buy.

SMS for example isn't bad in itself and can be a great thing, but it's really shaping the youth of today into some kind of techno-zombies who can barely spell or form complete sentences.

I see kids as young as 8 or 9 literally walking around stores with their eyes glued to the screens & clicking away on the new phones their parents got them. It's really a sad sight.

I've seen stories like the one above popping up more frequently the last few years. Not a good trend.
Then there are people who want to officially add certain SMS-type words into dictionaries...
I understand languages evolve over time, but that is just straight devolution.

Well, to be fair, it's not technology's fault that people are doing that. It's people's fault. No one's forcing people to go out and buy new tech stuff that's expensive and unaffordable.

I'm a believer in technology, and a non-believer that humanity will always use technology in a beneficial way. There are just too many stupid people around with deluded notions.

nicely put!

way I see it, technology = good, humans = bad.

eg, splitting the atom, major major discovery, awesome new knowledge blahblahblah...and then nukes.

I guess more watchdogs are needed in science? But then it would be easy to suppress knowledge. Hmm. Its a toughie.
My name is Dom and I like making ambientish music and drinking tea. Nice to meet you.

with our without technology, humans' fate too will be as good as they are
all we can do is mass realisation of the fact that we're bad and we need to be good in order to live good

Yeah true.

I dunno how I feel about certain things though. Like a refrigerator that automatically orders products when they run out... it's putting too much reliance on technology in my opinion. Things like that aren't that popular though (yet) and are more novelty for now.

that is until the technological singularity....

basically, when humans create a machine smarter than a human (with AI etc etc)

then that machine can build a better machine than itself, then that machine can make an even better machine, and so on and so forth...

will be crazy if/when it happens...

we are the evolution of our planet... the earth was meant to make us.
we help it reach its next level.
we are but a complex bug, a bug that needs too much energy.
everything we are attracted to is energy intensive.
like trees... a massive source of energy, dead or alive

At best, technology will make us live like the Jetsons. At worst, we get this:

I'm content either way

What about over dependence on technology.
