Trying to get an idea of what to look for with processor speed/etc.
Any suggestions welcome. Been finding some reasonable stuff, just need to figure out what would be best for both applications.
Thanks!

i am using a Dell Inspiron 2ghz duo core processor, 2 gigs of ram along with some other stuff (ati radeon video card) and i got it for around 1300. For producing and live its perfect.. i never have any buffering issues (well if i load up like 12 instances of of heavy cpu VSTis etc, sure..) and for using programs like traktor and ableton, it works top. Some people dont like Dell, but in my experience they are really reliable and sturdy machines. Customer service is garbage, but thats to be expected this day in age, sadly. Whatever you do.. dont order online. Make up the order you want through there website and then CALL them, no matter who the maker is.. You can always get better deals that way (usually these kind of sales jobs are commission, so you can usually squeeze every kind of deal out of them.)

First decision is Mac or PC. Many musicians use the Mac, but PCs can work just as well and most software is cross-platform. I personally use a Dell PC with Reason, Live, and Soundforge. This has worked well for production and live p.a. purposes. I would just make sure to get a 7200 rpm hard drive and at least 1 GB ram. If you go PC, avoid the Celeron processor.

Some of you may or may not know, but if your a student or u know a student, just get them to order you a mac book pro,or anything off the apple store. Great for if ur wanting to get logic cheap or other software aswel. You can get a well good discount (at least couple hundred quid off). Thats what i did anyway...
Try it out,
Rob

ive been using a 15 inch Powerbook g4 (1.33Ghz) for a few years now and im generally feeling it.
Parson, do you find the macbook fast enough for EVERYTHING you want to do, or does it tend to limit what kinda of VST processing you can do with it?
im kinda wondering cos im not sure if i would want a macbook or a macbook pro...
itd be nice to have plenty of power and not have to spend $2k

My macbook is a merker. Don't use it for production yet but it runs CS2 and macromedia and other programs with no fuss at all. You can upgrade memory and hard-drive when you buy it.

I've had a Mac laptop for two years and it's been very stable. I'm running Logic Pro on it.
