sounds like your sound drivers aren't set up correctly. consult the Help manual. also, reason 5 isn't out yet.

The beta is, but from what i've seen of it you would be better off waiting for reason 6 and sticking with 4.

Did you load up an instrument? Before any sound comes out of the keyboard it needs a sound to play.

I'm guessing your young enough to go to the local youth clubs?

Pester them to let you use their studio gear, and if they haven't got any, pester them to sort out some funding to buy you a basic production PC.

Failing that, download the freeware pack I linked to in my signature strip and go to a local internet cafe. They'll have computers with headphones good enough for producing basic tracks with the freeware pack. That's what I did when I didn't have access to computers at home.

How much money, if any, have you got to start producing with? Because my bet is that if your laptop doesn't even come with an inbuilt soundcard it's probably not gonna be good enough to run much in the way of production so if your really serious about this you might want to think about getting a decent laptop sometime soon..

i dont have enough money to buy a new laptop as much as i would like to, but ive got enough money to upgrade it.

i thinking of purchasing a 1GB more RAM and then buy a soundcard if needed.

just need suggestions for soundcards, i dont really wanna pay more than 100 quid if thats possible?

At this stage it doesn't really matter, you just want a soundcard really. I use my stock one that came with my laptop (though I do have quite a high end lappy I guess) but it wont make much of a difference till you really know what your doing. Monitors wise krk and samson rubicon are great entry level choices but you wont be buying them for a while anyway. What specs are you running currently? I think my backup laptop only has 1gig of ram and a couple hundred gigs of HD space, no idea what processor etc it has but it can run ableton and reason pretty much fine....stutters trying to run them together like on my main machine though...

Also I feel everyone should stop trying to push and pull the new guy into using their DAW of choice, you don't wanna be responsible for making someone spend months in a DAW they don't like untill they finally either give up or make a switch to something more 'them' just because you said your personal DAW was 'the best'. We already have a thread for that so lets keep our incredibly large dicks out of the newbies face shall we? They all have merits but they all have flaws and he's only going to find the best one for him if he tries them all/a lot out first :)

hehe, telling everyone off.........i'm a man now :t:

well my laptop is pretty low end dude.

only got 512mb but I'm ordering a 1 gb tonight and might buy another 1 gb at a later date depending on how much i need it.

I'm not too sure on my processor either but i think it'll do the job and I'm also buying a external HDD this weekend.

after that all ill need to do is buy a sound card. I'm pretty sure i don't have one but is their a way i can check incase i do have a shitty inbuilt one lol?

You don't sound dumb, if you were dumb you wouldn't be here asking valid questions and looking for advice on setting yourself up! :)

To make an analogy between music production and driving. We must know how to drive before we really need to worry about driving a super pimped beast.

So grab yourself that RAM (which should help nicely) and get going with a set of headphones until you know for sure that you enjoy producing.

When you feel like you are making progress, you will be in a better position to start judging what kinds of soundcards are suitable for your needs.

Off the bat, I'm going to say you could get away with a £100 M-Audio card and that it will meet your needs for at least two years. If later down the line you start getting into heavy recording, then you may wish to look at the cards which have more input options etc.

For the time being, any E-MU, M-Audio or Edirol will do you sweet! :)

And until you have that, even an onboard soundcard should be sufficient to start producing on a set of headphones. Remember that music production isn't something that can be picked up over night, thus even whilst you don't have all the kit you may want, you can still be learning new concepts and techniques and practicing making beats.

Patrick :)

hell yea, don't let your equipment limit your creativity... i've been living room producing for 9 months and have learned so much just staying in the lab, grinding, reading these forums, and checking out online guides. if you listen to the first track i made and the one i was messing around with today, the difference is hilarious.
