Airhead Appreciation Thread

I've been searching countless pages of the internet and through endless threads on this forum and there seems to be almost nothing on this guy! Admittedly he's technically only had one release and it was with James Blake, but I've heard a few of his other tracks in mixes and the track "Paper Street" recently on the SUB:STANCE mix by Scuba. And I think he has a really refreshing and original sound, possibly one of the most underrated producers around at the moment? The only recent piece of news I've heard on him is this:

"then it’s time for Airhead. A production partner of James Blake’s, the pair’s recent joint single for the Brainmath label was superb, and now Airhead’s solo ambient jaunt ‘Paper Street’, which features on Scuba’s Sub:stance mix CD for Ostgut-Ton, gets a release. It’s backed with a remix by Hoppner, who we often talk about as one of the world’s most underrated producers. Following that is Airhead’s full solo album, Empty 9-Volts. We have no audio, or even a tracklist, release date or artwork yet, but we will have soon (we’d wager release date for the LP will be in about three months’ time). Watch out for a full FACT feature on Airhead nearer the time – he’s someone we have high hopes for."

Which was featured on Factmag.com quite a few months back now. I wondered if anyone has any updated info on him at the moment?, Pembroke has to be my tune of the year so far.

- Paper Street

- Pembroke

Found an interview with him from July 2nd, insightful into his influence and what to expect on the album, but still no definate release dates :( ....

http://pipedownson.com/2010/07/airhead-pipedown03/

So #pipedown03 is tomorrow. Jeez. Airhead is the only person we haven’t featured on the blog thus far even though he could well be the most interesting. After the Pembroke EP with James Blake, a tune on Scuba’s Sub:stance compilation and a mix on Mary Anne Hobbs the rest of 2010 promises to be an exciting year for him with a 12″ and an album lined up. His DJ sets are one of the few that affectively make a link between 140 bpm movements and hip-hop timbres too. Ahead of tomorrow Sduk and myself jumped in conversation (IM style) for an altogether too brief interview.

+

The beginning, where did it start for you?

It all started when i stopped writing dishonest music; that is, terrible tear-out dancefloor tracks I thought would make me successful. I re-discovered all the music I loved growing up, started creating tracks that I really cared about… and then things started happening.

And you’ve got some exciting stuff coming on Brainmath this year – what is that?

Putting out an album Empty 9-Volts, but before that Paper Street is coming out on 12″ with a Nick Hoppner remix.

And for anyone that may not have heard anything other than the collaboration with James Blake, what’s the vibe like? How does (or doesn’t) it differ from Pembroke and Lock In The Lion?

Depressing pieces for lonely bloggers to listen to late at night on headphones.

I know you’ve been experimenting with a few different methods of playing out to a crowd, from live to traditional DJ sets and all the mucky space inbetween. What’s the deal with that?

I’m still deciding on the best way to perform my music. So far doing a Flying Lotus / Hudson Mohawke style show has been great, but I think I’d be more comfortable doing a live show. Obviously I DJ as well, which I’ll be doing on Saturday with James.

There’s clearly a very musical background to your production, what’s the story behind the songs and the influences?

I think like most people, I grew up going through musical phases. At first I loved classical music and started playing the cello, then I moved into rock and early blues which led me to the guitar. At about 15 I was heavily into hip hop artists like cLOUDDEAD and Cannibal Ox; that’s when i got my first sampler and started producing my own tracks. The music I’m making now is a direct result of these influences, as well as early electronic musicians; Edgard Varese’s conclusion that music is simply ‘organised sound’ validates my use of environmental noise. Essentially, the music I enjoy listening to and making is focused on evoking emotion.

How do you go about collecting / cataloguing environmental noise?

I don’t set out with a deliberate idea when collecting sounds; I generally take a little sound recorder out and simply capture various noises.

And finally what can we expect from you at the Rhythm Factory?

Slurred speech and gun fingers as I litter James’ music with 17 minute post-rock interludes.
